An iPhone photo can contain location metadata showing where it was taken. That information is useful for searching and viewing memories on a map, but it may reveal a home, workplace, school, or travel location when the original file is shared. Fortunately, the Photos app lets you remove a saved location, hide it from one share, or stop Camera from recording locations in future photos.

Three ways to control photo location data

Choose the method that matches what you want to achieve:

  • Remove the saved location: deletes the location attached to a selected photo or video in your library.
  • Exclude location while sharing: keeps the location in your library but leaves it out of that sharing action.
  • Stop future location tagging: prevents the Camera app from adding a location to new photos and videos.

The second option is usually the most convenient when you still want location-based search and map features for your private library.

How to check whether an iPhone photo has a location

  1. Open the Photos app.
  2. Open the photo or video you want to inspect.
  3. Swipe up on the image or tap the Info button.
  4. Look for a map or location name in the information panel.

If a map appears, the item contains location information. Apple also lets you browse geotagged items on a map in Photos, which can help you review older images that may reveal sensitive places.

How to permanently remove location data from one photo

  1. Open the photo or video in the Photos app.
  2. Tap the More button, shown as three dots.
  3. Tap Adjust Location.
  4. Choose No Location.

The item remains in your library, but its saved location is removed. Removing location does not delete the picture, change its visual quality, or erase unrelated details such as its capture date and camera information.

How to remove locations from multiple iPhone photos

  1. In Photos, tap Select.
  2. Select the photos or videos you want to change.
  3. Tap the More button.
  4. Choose Adjust Location, then select No Location.

Review the selection carefully before applying the change, especially if you use the Places or Map views to organize travel photos. Apple allows information changes to be reverted in some Photos workflows, but it is still sensible to work with a small batch first.

How to share a photo without location data

Use this method when you want to keep the location in your own library but not send it with the shared copy:

  1. Open Photos and select one or more photos or videos.
  2. Tap the Share button.
  3. Tap Options at the top of the share sheet.
  4. Turn off Location.
  5. Tap Done, then choose Messages, Mail, AirDrop, or another sharing option.

This setting applies to the items in that sharing action. Check the Options screen again the next time location privacy matters rather than assuming it is a permanent global preference.

Check the “All Photos Data” option

Apple’s share options can also include All Photos Data for AirDrop and iCloud links. That option can send the original file with its edit history and metadata. If your goal is to minimize shared information, leave it turned off and confirm that Location is also off before sending.

How to stop Camera adding locations to future photos

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Privacy & Security.
  3. Tap Location Services.
  4. Scroll down and tap Camera.
  5. Select Never.

This prevents Camera from adding new location coordinates. It does not remove location data already saved in your photo library, so use the earlier steps for existing items.

Disabling Camera location access also means new photos will not automatically appear in location-based searches and map collections. If you value those features, keeping Camera access enabled and turning off Location only when sharing may be a better balance.

What other information can a shared photo contain?

Apple notes that photo and video metadata can include the date and time, location, capture device, and captions. Turning off Location in the share sheet specifically addresses the location. It should not be treated as a tool for stripping every possible metadata field.

Also remember that the image itself may reveal a location through street signs, house numbers, school uniforms, reflections, recognizable landmarks, or a visible screen. Removing GPS coordinates cannot hide information that is visible in the picture.

Privacy checks before sharing sensitive photos

  • Inspect the photo for addresses, badges, documents, computer screens, and reflections.
  • Use the share-sheet Options menu and confirm that Location is off.
  • Avoid sending the original with All Photos Data when it is unnecessary.
  • Share only with the intended person or group.
  • Review the destination app’s privacy settings and photo access.

Frequently asked questions

Does sharing an iPhone photo reveal its location?

It can. Apple says shared photos and videos may include associated metadata such as location. Use Share > Options and turn off Location before sending when you do not want to include it.

Does turning off Location while sharing remove it from my library?

No. It excludes the location from that sharing action while preserving the location on the copy in your Photos library.

Can I remove a location after taking the photo?

Yes. Open the item, tap the More button, choose Adjust Location, and select No Location.

Can I restore a photo’s original location?

Apple provides a Revert option when adjusting photo information in supported versions of Photos. Open the adjustment controls and look for Revert. Availability and wording can vary by iOS version.

Will disabling Camera location remove old geotags?

No. It affects new photos and videos only. Existing items must be changed separately in Photos.

Does removing location metadata blur the background or hide landmarks?

No. It removes stored location information, not visible details. Crop or edit the image if the scene itself reveals where it was taken.

Conclusion

For occasional sharing, turn off Location in the Photos share-sheet Options menu. To clean an existing item, use Adjust Location > No Location. If you never want Camera to geotag new images, deny Camera access under Location Services. These controls let you protect location privacy without giving up the Photos features you still find useful.
