How to Export a WhatsApp Chat Without Media

Export a WhatsApp chat without photos or videos on Android or iPhone, save the text safely, and understand why an export is not a restorable backup.

WhatsApp can export an individual or group conversation as a file that you can save or share outside the app. Choosing Without media keeps the export smaller by leaving out photos, videos, voice messages, and other attachments while preserving the available text history.

This guide explains how to export a WhatsApp chat without media on Android and iPhone, what the exported file contains, why it cannot be restored as a WhatsApp backup, and how to troubleshoot a missing export option.

What “export chat without media” means

When you export without media, WhatsApp prepares the conversation history as text rather than attaching recent media files. On iPhone, WhatsApp states that the history is exported in a ZIP file. The result is intended for reading, saving, or sharing outside WhatsApp.

An exported chat is not a WhatsApp backup. WhatsApp’s Help Center says the chat history cannot be imported back because it is a text file rather than a backup file. If your goal is to move WhatsApp to a new phone or restore conversations after reinstalling the app, use WhatsApp’s backup or chat-transfer tools instead.

How to export a WhatsApp chat without media on Android

  1. Open WhatsApp and select the individual or group chat you want to export.
  2. Tap the three-dot More options menu.
  3. Tap More.
  4. Select Export chat.
  5. Choose Without media.
  6. Select an available destination from the Android share sheet, such as an email app, messaging app, notes app, cloud storage app, or file-saving option.
  7. Complete the save or share action in the selected app.

The destinations you see depend on the apps installed on your device. Before sending the file, confirm that the recipient, account, folder, and sharing permission are correct.

How to export a WhatsApp chat without media on iPhone

  1. Open WhatsApp and enter the individual or group chat.
  2. Tap the contact or group name at the top of the conversation.
  3. Scroll down and tap Export Chat.
  4. Choose Without Media.
  5. Select where to save or share the export, such as Mail, Messages, Notes, Files, or another available app.
  6. Finish saving or sending the file from the iOS share sheet.

WhatsApp says an iPhone chat history is exported as a ZIP file. After saving it, open the ZIP in the Files app or another compatible file manager to access the text file inside.

Why choose “without media”?

The export is easier to save and send

Photos, videos, audio, and documents can make an export much larger. A text-only version is usually quicker to prepare and less likely to exceed the limits of an email or messaging service.

The conversation is easier to search

A text file can be opened in many notes, document, and text-editor apps. You can search for a name, date, phrase, or message without opening media attachments individually.

It reduces unnecessary data sharing

If you only need the written conversation, excluding media avoids copying unrelated photos and files. However, the text may still contain names, phone numbers, addresses, personal details, or confidential information, so it should be handled carefully.

It creates a simple reference copy

A text-only export can help you keep a personal record of instructions, project notes, travel details, or another conversation you are permitted to retain. It does not create a live, synchronized archive: new messages will not be added to the saved file automatically.

What an exported WhatsApp chat does not include

The contents can vary by platform, conversation, and WhatsApp version. Keep these limits in mind:

  • Media is excluded: choosing Without media leaves out the chat’s photos, videos, audio, and document attachments.
  • It is not a restorable backup: the text file cannot be imported into WhatsApp as the original conversation.
  • View-once messages are excluded on iPhone: WhatsApp specifically notes that view-once messages are not exported.
  • Some chat protections can block export: if Advanced Chat Privacy is enabled for a conversation, WhatsApp says participants cannot export that chat.
  • The file is a snapshot: messages sent after the export are not added to it.

Open the completed file and check that it contains the section of the conversation you need before relying on it.

How to save the export privately

A WhatsApp conversation may contain information belonging to other people. Treat an exported file with the same care as the original chat.

  • Save it to a private folder or account rather than a public shared location.
  • Double-check the email recipient or sharing destination before sending.
  • Use restricted sharing permissions when storing it in cloud storage.
  • Avoid uploading sensitive conversations to unknown conversion or analysis websites.
  • Delete unnecessary copies from Downloads, Files, email drafts, or shared folders.
  • Follow workplace, school, or organizational rules when the chat contains their information.

Exporting a conversation does not notify you whether the other participant agrees with wider distribution. Only retain or share content when you have a legitimate reason and appropriate permission.

Why the Export Chat option may be missing

Advanced Chat Privacy is enabled

WhatsApp’s Advanced Chat Privacy feature can prevent participants from exporting a protected individual or group chat. Open the chat information screen and review its privacy setting. In a group, the ability to change that setting may depend on the group’s configuration and administrator controls.

You are checking WhatsApp Web or the desktop app

WhatsApp’s official export steps are provided for the mobile apps. Open the conversation in WhatsApp on your Android phone or iPhone and use the mobile chat menu.

The app needs an update

Install the latest available WhatsApp update from Google Play or the App Store. Menu wording and placement can differ slightly between app versions.

You opened the wrong menu

On Android, start from the chat’s three-dot menu, then choose More > Export chat. On iPhone, tap the contact or group name and find Export Chat on the information screen.

A managed device restricts sharing

Work or school device policies can limit the apps shown in the share sheet or prevent saving data to personal locations. If the chat and device are organization-managed, follow its approved data-handling process.

What to do if the export will not send

Save it before sharing

If an email or messaging app fails, use a file-saving or cloud-storage option from the share sheet when available. You can then share the saved file through an appropriate method.

Check available storage

The phone needs enough free space to prepare the export and hand it to another app. Remove unnecessary downloads or temporary files if storage is nearly full.

Try another destination

A particular email or notes app may reject the file or fail to open the share sheet. Try Files, Drive, or another trusted destination offered by the device.

Confirm the export opens

After saving, open the text or ZIP file and inspect several parts of the conversation. Do this before deleting messages, changing phones, or sending the only copy elsewhere.

Exporting is different from backing up WhatsApp

These two features solve different problems:

  • Export chat: creates a readable file for one conversation that can be saved or shared outside WhatsApp.
  • WhatsApp backup or transfer: is designed to restore or move supported chat data within WhatsApp.

Do not use an export as your only migration plan. If you need your conversations to appear inside WhatsApp on a new device, follow WhatsApp’s official backup or device-transfer instructions for your phone.

Frequently asked questions

Can I export all WhatsApp chats at once?

WhatsApp’s standard export process works from an individual or group chat. Repeat the process separately for each conversation you need.

Can I import an exported chat back into WhatsApp?

No. WhatsApp states that exported chat history cannot be re-imported because it is a text file, not a backup file.

Will exporting a WhatsApp chat delete any messages?

No. Exporting creates a separate copy and does not delete the conversation from WhatsApp.

Does “without media” remove photos from WhatsApp?

No. It only excludes media from the exported file. The original photos and other attachments remain subject to the chat and storage settings on your device.

Why can’t I export a protected chat?

Advanced Chat Privacy can disable chat export. WhatsApp says this setting limits how messages and media can be shared outside that conversation.

Review the file before you rely on it

Exporting without media is a straightforward way to keep a smaller, readable copy of a WhatsApp conversation. Save it to a trusted location, verify that the required messages are present, and remember that the file is a reference copy—not a WhatsApp backup that can restore the chat later.
