Exclusive – Jamai No. 1’s Shruti Gholap on pay disparity: I believe we are heading towards a future where talent is valued equally

Actress Shruti Ghopal, who plays the role of Sumati in the show Jamai No. 1, says that she has been blessed with many influential women in her life, such as her friends and her mother, who have taught her so much in life. She adds that their presence makes her want to do better.
“I look up to my mom, Ujwala Gholap, because she is the definition of strength and love. She has taught me to stay positive and work hard no matter what. I also admire my friend Meena Gheewala, who is independent, supportive, and always encourages me to be my best,” she says.
Ask her if she feels that TV shows need to update the way they portray women on screen, and she says, “I think we’ve come a long way! Today, we see strong, independent female characters who are leading stories and breaking stereotypes. Of course, there’s always room to grow, but I’m happy to see the industry moving in the right direction.”
She adds, “I am currently playing Sumati in Jamai No. 1. It has been an incredible experience for me. She is a woman of great strength and integrity, always standing up for what is right, no matter the circumstances. What I admire most about her is that she is fearless—she doesn’t let anything or anyone intimidate her. At the same time, Sumati is deeply loving and devoted to her family. She wants the best for her children and constantly motivates them to become independent and strong individuals. She believes in empowering them rather than sheltering them, teaching them to stand on their own feet and face the world with confidence.
Portraying Sumati has been truly inspiring because she reflects the qualities I admire in real life—courage, resilience, and unconditional love for family. She is a reminder that being strong doesn’t mean being harsh; it means standing firm in your values while supporting the people you love.”
As for pay disparity in the industry, she says, “Things are definitely improving! Women are now leading shows, getting great opportunities, and making their mark. While there’s still progress to be made, I believe we are heading towards a future where talent is valued equally.”
She adds, “I’d love to see even more women in leadership roles—directors, producers, writers—shaping the stories we see on screen. The industry is already evolving, and I hope this continues so that women’s voices and perspectives are heard even more. Social media has created so many amazing opportunities for women! It has given them a powerful voice and a platform to inspire others. Of course, challenges exist, but I believe the digital space is opening new doors for women to shine on their own terms.”
