Actor Amogh Aaditya, best known for his role as Subramanya in the popular Kannada daily soap Shravani Subramanya, has had turned out to be everyone’s favorite on Kannada TV. In a candid conversation with ETimes, Amogh reflected on his journey, challenges, and the valuable lessons he learned along the way.
From Theatre to Television: A Journey of Learning
“My journey in the entertainment industry has been an enriching learning experience,” Amogh shared. Beginning his career during his college days, Amogh initially worked in writing and direction before transitioning to acting.
“Being a theatre artist further shaped my skills and gave me the confidence to perform on screen. Theatre has been a powerful teacher — it instilled discipline, improved my understanding of characters, and enhanced my ability to connect with the audience,” he explained.
Over time, Amogh built an impressive portfolio with shows like Shantam Paapam, Hoo Male, Papa Pandu, Mithuna Rashi, Sathya, Antarapata, Geetha, and Dorasaani. However, Shravani Subramanya holds a special place in his heart, as he plays the titular role.

“I never imagined myself playing a lead role until I worked in the serial Sathya,” Amogh revealed. “That project gave me the confidence to believe I could carry a prominent role. It was a turning point in my career.”
Interestingly, Amogh mentioned that the makers of Shravani Subramanya found several similarities between him and the character of Subbu. “Interestingly, when the makers of Shravani Subramanya were casting for the role of Subbu, they noticed several similarities between me and the character. Subbu’s personality, his simplicity, and the way he connects with people seemed to resonate with my own traits. That connection made it easier for me to step into the role and bring authenticity to the character. I believe that’s what helped me portray Subbu in a way that feels relatable and real to the audience.”

Portraying Subbu’s innocence came with its own set of challenges. “Subbu is incredibly innocent — it’s almost unimaginable how pure-hearted he is,” Amogh shared.
To prepare for the role, he studied iconic performances. “I started watching films featuring legendary actors like Dr. Rajkumar, Tom Hanks, and Aamir Khan. These actors have an incredible ability to convey innocence in a way that feels natural and heartfelt. Dr. Rajkumar’s sincerity, Tom Hanks’ warmth, and Aamir Khan’s childlike charm — I drew inspiration from all of them to shape Subbu’s character. Observing their body language, expressions, and emotional depth really helped me understand how to portray innocence without overdoing it.”

Amogh concludes, “I’m grateful that my efforts have resonated with the audience. The fact that people often mention Subbu’s innocence when they talk to me is truly rewarding. It makes me feel like I’ve succeeded in bringing that sincerity to life, and that connection with viewers means a lot to me.”

“Subbu’s look is quite special to me because it’s the first time I’ve grown my hair long in my life”

“When I first decided to keep my hair long, I faced a lot of doubts and suggestions from people around me. Many advised me to cut it short, saying that having long hair might limit my chances of getting roles on television. At that time, there was a belief that conventional, well-groomed appearances were safer for on-screen opportunities. Honestly, I questioned my decision too, but I decided to go with my instincts and stick to the look.”
Amogh further explains, “Ironically, what seemed like a risk at first ended up becoming one of the most defining aspects of my character as Subbu. Today, my long hair has become a signature style — something the audience instantly associates with Subbu. It has added to his charm, making him even more relatable and memorable. Looking back, I’m glad I trusted myself and embraced this change. It’s a reminder that sometimes, taking a leap of faith and staying true to yourself can create something truly unique.”

“My on-screen chemistry with Asiya is something I truly cherish”

Discussing his bond with co-star Asiya, Amogh said, “Our on-screen chemistry is something I truly cherish. We rehearse each scene thoroughly to ensure our performances feel natural and convincing. Asiya’s dedication and support make our partnership even stronger.”
He further emphasized the importance of preparation. “We discuss dialogues, emotions, and reactions to bring authenticity to our characters. Our off-screen friendship has helped us connect better on screen as well,” he added.

“I’ve always believed in making the most of every opportunity that comes my way”

“Throughout my career, I never deliberately chased after lead roles or aimed specifically for a titular character. Instead, I focused on accepting diverse roles, whether big or small, positive or negative. For me, every character holds value and presents a chance to grow as an actor.”
He continues, “I believe this mindset has been my mantra for success. I’ve always trusted that the more we appear on screen, the better our chances of being recognized. It’s not just about playing the lead — it’s about being visible, proving your versatility, and consistently giving your best performance. Each role, no matter its size, teaches you something and helps you improve as an artist.”

Acknowledging the growing influence of digital platforms, Amogh recalled an incident where he missed out on a role due to his social media following.
“There was a time when I was almost finalized for a show — I had cleared every stage of the audition process, from acting tests to look trials. I was confident about my performance and felt I had given my best. But unfortunately, I was rejected because my social media following was considered too low. While it was disappointing at the time, I wasn’t disheartened because I knew I had put in my best effort.”
He continues, “That experience taught me something valuable — social media presence is now a crucial part of an actor’s profile. It’s no longer just about talent and skill; visibility online also plays a significant role. Today, casting decisions often factor in an actor’s reach, engagement, and popularity on social media platforms.”
Amogh emphasizes, “That said, I believe it’s all about mindset. While social media is important, it shouldn’t define an actor’s worth. Building a strong digital presence is part of the process now, and actors should embrace it as a tool to connect with their audience and showcase their work. But ultimately, what matters most is staying dedicated to your craft and trusting your journey.”
