chatGPT SPARKS BOTH EXCITEMENT AND FEAR AMONG US
With the release of ChatGPT, AI is no longer a futuristic concept. It is present inside our pockets. As of 30 November 2022, ChatGPT app is free for public testing. Not even a week of its release, it crossed 1 million users.
But what is it? Can you use it?
WHAT IS ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is an intelligent chatbot with an interface like WhatsApp. It is a conversational platform, trained with huge amount of data.
ChatGPT gives you information in a very easy digestible manner. You might how it does so?
ChatGPT is based on the model Generative Pre-trained Transformer aka GPT. It is language processing model to generate human like text. After its initial release in 2018, several updates followed.GPT-2 has the ability the generate news articles, compose poems, etc.
Massive data sets were used to train GPT-3. It can even crack a joke, create content, etc. It is the current and most powerful version so far.
WHO DEVELOPED ChatGPT?
Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and few others came to address the fear of misuse of AI, laying the founding stones of OpenAI. ChatGPT is the brainchild of these founders of OpenAI. Though Elon Musk left the company in 2018.
OpenAI has done impressive work with AI as an open source and non-profit organization. They have done other ambitious projects such as DALL-E and Whisper.
DALL-E became popular due to its ability to generate realistic images based on text inputs.
News reports suggests Microsoft is in talks to invest 10 billion dollars in OpenAI.
IS THE ChatGPT APP FREE TO DOWNLOAD?
Absolutely, yes. As of now, ChatGPT app is free to download and use on your smartphone. Sometime in the future, OpenAI is planning to monetize the app.
HOW TO USE IT?
You can start by browsing ChatGPT on your browser. It will forward you to OpenAI page where you click on ‘Try ChatGPT’.
Next, a page will come up where you sign up with your email id and password. You can log in into the ChatGPT UI, a user-friendly page. The UI may change over time but I kind of like the present one.
At the search bar below is where you start conversation by asking questions. You can ask follow-up questions in the same chat which is convenient for us.
One amusing feature is that you can upvote or downvote an answer that ChatGPT provides. There’s room for additional feedbacks. Isn’t that fascinating? I mean you can revert back to the chatbot with your review and it will learn and improvise.
THE USES OF ChatGPT:
The ChatGPT app is a blessing for many where you want to automate mundane tasks. By entering few keywords or facts, you can generate documents, business proposals, etc.
As compared to its predecessors, ChatGPT is very versatile. From composing an email to debugging a code, it can do all. ChatGPT, like any other chatbots, mimics human conversation- providing human-like experience while conversing.
An interesting feature of ChatGPT is that it stays in the context of actual conversation. You can always ask follow up questions without having to explain everything from start. That is super valuable because you’re saving time.
IS ChatGPT COMING FOR YOUR JOB?
ChatGPT is here to transform our interaction with internet. We’ve been dealing with AI in different context since many years. All navigation tools, language translation and security tools are all powered by AI.
It is true the work of content writing is being automated. Why invest in employing a content writer, if we have one-stop solution, right ?
With power of content writing, debugging code; ChatGPT can potentially takeover our jobs.
Other way around, health care professionals spent huge chunk of their time maintaining records of their patients. What if we automate the process of documentation? With the automation process, the doctors and nurses can dedicate more time to their patients.
There are too many questions regarding ChatGPT. But it all boils down to one question – what kind of job do we want over to the machines?
WHAT ARE ITS LIMITATIONS?
Now that we ran over what can ChatGPT do to help us, it is time we discuss its limitations. Upon asking ChatGPT “What are your shortcomings?” , it promptly responded with some. It acknowledged the fact that as it is trained on data sets and by the engineers, it can give harmful instructions or biased answers.
It is, after all, a machine. A machine neither understand the nuances of human conversations nor emphasizes with humans.
The knowledge cut-off of ChatGPT is 2021. That indicates it has limited knowledge about events after that. Also, its knowledge is not updated in real-time. There’s fair chance that every information may or may not be current.
It was also seen that ChatGPT tend to give repetitive and non-sensical answers. Even OpenAI acknowledged it on their website.
Despite training it to bounce inappropriate queries, ChatGPT can show unsafe content and give harmful instructions.
ChatGPT ignites both excitement and fear. The AI landscape is expanding rapidly and is open to discussions. Despite the dicey arguments, AI managed to attract fundings from top institutes. The future of AI and how it entangles humankind will be quite fascinating to see.
