Police escort flesh trade survivor to exam centre 50km away from Nagpur

NAGPUR: A 17-year-old girl rescued from a flesh trade den in Nagpur a year ago, was escorted to her examination centre in Umred, 50km off the city, in a police vehicle on Thursday with women cops in tow.
They stood guard outside the venue for three hours as she wrote her first-year BA exam and was escorted back to the shelter home in the same vehicle.
The minor, who was dramatically rescued from the brothel a year ago, had cleared her Class 12 Boards exam within a few weeks, while staying in the shelter home. Then too, she sought police protection due to protracted legal and security issues.
Though forced into prostitution due to abject poverty, the girl dreamt of becoming a social worker and reshaping her life at the govt shelter home. Her parents were daily-wage labourers, and she was the elder of two siblings.
The girl left her home one day after a tiff with her family over a friend she befriended on social media. After staying at an acquaintance’s house, she joined catering and event management groups to earn her livelihood. One of her friends lured her into flesh trade, claiming she could earn big money.
Soon, she was trapped in a vicious cycle of selling sex for survival. A police raid at a hidden brothel in Manish Nagar area pulled her out of the inky abyss and she regained focus at the govt shelter home.
She wasted no time and began studying for Class 12 Boards and cleared it too.
4 others appearing for 10, 12 Boards
An official of the shelter home said she was sincere and focussed on clearing her graduation exam. “She wants to do her post-graduation in social studies and become an employee of the shelter home,” said the official, adding four other inmates are also appearing for Class 10 and 12 Board exams.
Shelter home officials had sent a request to the Beltarodi police to allow the girl to appear in the first-year BA exams and the cops reciprocated swiftly in the matter.
Senior inspector Mukund Kawade of Beltarodi police station said, “It was the question of a minor’s career and rehabilitation. Second, the girl’s case is being heard in court, which means she has to be protected,” said Kawade, adding police ensure she gives her exams.
