LUCKNOW: A 24-year-old nursing student in Lucknow sustained serious injuries after jumping out of a moving e-rickshaw to escape alleged sexual assault by the driver and three other men.The incident, captured on CCTV, occurred on Monday evening as the woman was returning home from her uncle’s house. She boarded an e-rickshaw from Burlington Crossing, expecting to travel to Tedhi Pulia. But after setting off, the driver picked up three acquaintances.Near Nishatganj, one of the men took over the controls while the driver moved beside the student. As the vehicle veered off-course toward a deserted stretch of Kursi Road and sped past her intended stop, the men allegedly began molesting her. When she protested, her mouth was reportedly covered to silence her screams.In a desperate attempt to escape, the woman jumped from the rickshaw near Janata Hospital. CCTV footage shows her being dragged along the road after hitting the ground. A local resident, Geeta Valmiki, witnessed the incident and rushed to her aid, taking her to a nearby hospital.The woman later recounted her ordeal to the police. “She was shaken and in pain, but determined to ensure the culprits didn’t get away,” said a relative.Police said the four accused—rickshaw driver Satyam Singh from Faizullaganj, and Anuj Gupta alias Akash, Ranjit Chauhan, and Anil Sinha from Keshavnagar—were arrested after being identified in CCTV footage, including from the vicinity of the hospital.“All four have previous criminal records,” said DCP Crime Kamlesh Dixit. “The driver was earlier imprisoned for theft.”Inspector Prabhatesh Srivastava of Gudamba Police added that footage from nearly a dozen CCTV cameras helped confirm the survivor’s account and trace the vehicle’s movement.The woman remains hospitalised and is receiving counselling.
