With a 32–20 record and the fifth seed in the Western Conference, the Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly thinking about adding former Brooklyn Nets guard Dennis Smith Jr. to strengthen their backcourt. The team made the trade in an attempt to improve its guard performance and lack of bench depth before the 2025 NBA Playoffs.
Dennis Smith Jr., a former No. 9 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, spent the 2024-25 season with Real Madrid in the EuroLeague but played only two games, scoring a total of eight points. Reports indicate he is now seeking a return to the NBA. “Veteran guard Dennis Smith Jr. is leaving Real Madrid and intends to make a return to the NBA this season, league sources tell me,” NBA insider Chris Haynes tweeted on Tuesday.
The Los Angeles Lakers, who recently acquired Luka Doncic from the Mavericks, have struggled to find consistent production from their guards outside of Gabe Vincent. Dennis Smith Jr., known for his explosive athleticism and defensive energy, could provide a spark off the bench. At 27, he brings seven years of NBA experience, having averaged 9.7 points, 4.2 assists, and 1.2 steals across 326 career games with six different teams.
During his last NBA season with the Brooklyn Nets in 2023-24, Smith Jr. posted career-best shooting efficiency, hitting 43.5% from the field while contributing 6.6 points and 3.6 assists per game. His ability to defend multiple positions and create opportunities in transition could make him a valuable addition to the Lakers’ rotation.
With 30 games left in the regular season, the Los Angeles Lakers are still fine-tuning their roster. Smith Jr.’s potential signing would address their need for athleticism and depth, particularly in the guard position. While he may not be a star, his energy and experience could help the team navigate the grueling stretch before the playoffs.

The Lakers’ front office, led by general manager Rob Pelinka, has shown a willingness to make bold moves, as evidenced by the Doncic trade. Adding Dennis Smith Jr. could be another low-risk, high-reward move to solidify their playoff aspirations. If he can replicate his efficiency from his Brooklyn Nets stint, the Los Angeles Lakers might just find the missing piece to elevate their bench production.
