Margao fire safety concerns call for audit

Margao: The Margao Municipal Council’s (MMC) recent request for a fire safety audit of its premises has triggered broader demands from locals for a city-wide assessment, particularly focusing on ageing buildings that haven’t renewed their fire safety no objection certificates (NOCs).
The issue gained prominence at the recent South Goa District Consumer Protection Council meeting, where businessman Vinayak Mordekar emphasised the need for mandatory annual renewal of fire safety approvals for residential and commercial buildings.
Local residents have called for a comprehensive survey involving firefighting forces, govt departments, NGOs, and citizens to identify fire-prone areas. They have highlighted the need for special attention to major residential and commercial buildings, govt offices, markets, bus stands, cinema halls, hospitals, and educational institutions.
