Rani Kapur has described her son late Sunjay Kapur’s passing as “sudden and suspicious”.

Rani Kapur, late Sunjay Kapur’s mother, has written to Sona Comstar’s board and shareholders, asking for the company’s AGM to be postponed in the light of her son’s death. She has also raised concerns on the circumstances leading to Sunjay Kapur’s death last month, according to an ET report. Rani Kapur, who has in the past served as the Chairperson of Sona Comstar and is the widow of industrialist Dr Surinder Kapur, has contacted the company’s Board and shareholders requesting a postponement of the Annual General Meeting.

Late Sunjay Kapur, was a prominent businessman who was previously married to actress Karisma Kapoor.Rani Kapur is the main owner of the Sona Group, inherited through her late husband’s will. According to an ET report, Rani Kapur has submitted a detailed request for the postponement of the 29th AGM, citing the “deep mourning” period following her son Sunjay Kapur’s death in the UK on June 12.

What Late Sunjay Kapur’s Mother Has Said

In her communication, she described her son’s passing as “sudden and suspicious” and indicated that she has not received any official documentation or explanation regarding the circumstances of his death.According to the ET report, she claimed she was compelled to sign papers whilst in a fragile emotional state following her son’s death, without understanding their substance. “The contents of such documents have never been revealed to me,” she reportedly said.“Please take note that during the aforesaid period of grieving, I was approached multiple times and compelled to sign various documents without explanation or even having time to read and understand the same,” Rani Kapur said.She expressed apprehension regarding recent changes in the organisation’s management hierarchy, saying that board appointments were proceeding without her awareness or approval.“I’ve been informed that certain people are representing themselves as being the largest shareholders of the Company since they claim to represent the interest of the family in the Company. I am fully convinced that the documents which were executed by me under coercion and duress, post the demise of my son, at a time of mental and emotional vulnerability are being misused.”“I have not given any consent or officially nominated any person to come on the Board… or represent me in any capacity,” she said.Kapur raised concerns about the AGM’s date being fixed, citing lack of transparency, especially considering the proposed resolutions’ potential long-term effects. She requested a postponement of at least two weeks to enable proper evaluation and information gathering.Her legal counsel, Senior Advocate Vaibhav Gaggar, verified to ANI that the letter was authentic. He emphasised that whilst Kapur was not pursuing legal remedies currently, she wanted a temporary halt to ensure informed decision-making.“If you choose to ignore this mail and move forward without conferring with me… I would be left with no other option but to assume that it was a conscious decision taken by you to the detriment of the company and the family,” she said.Sunjay Kapur, the chairman of automotive components company Sona Comstar, died in London on June 12, 2025. He experienced a cardiac arrest whilst playing polo in the United Kingdom.The cremation ceremony took place at the Lodhi Road Cremation Ground in South Delhi on June 19, attended by immediate family members and close associates.
