Los Angeles Lakers face tricky trade deadline as limited assets complicate hunt for impact wing | NBA News
As the 2026 NBA trade deadline is approaching, the Los Angeles Lakers must boost their team if they hope to qualify for a championship. The Lakers are allegedly searching for a wing, which is a difficult challenge considering their reported lack of resources. .The team has always been the subject of trade rumors, like suggesting to trade Austin Reaves or Luka Doncic. For a large part of the season, it was widely believed that the Los Angeles Lakers would approach the trade deadline cautiously because of their narrow margin for error. Now, they again made the news for fueling another trade rumor.
The Lakers are facing a tough deadline, with limited assets forcing them to get creative in trade talks
The Lakers’ three main expiring contracts, Rui Hachimura at $18.2 million, Gabe Vincent at $11.5 million, and Maxi Kleber at $11 million, have apparently garnered minimal interest. It allegedly made Los Angeles’ search for a young two-way wing more difficult. Some NBA insiders have some opinion on the trade rumors. Kevin Pelton of ESPN believes that Dalton Knecht should be traded. Although Knecht was expected to be a good shooter from Tennessee, he hasn’t reportedly performed well in the NBA. Pelton wrote about it:“Defensive challenges limited Knecht’s role as a rookie, when he was shooting 37.6% on 3s… Now that Knecht has slumped to 31.1% beyond the arc in Year 2, he has dropped to 12th on the roster in minutes per game.”He continued:“The Lakers’ challenge as the deadline approaches is finding ways to supplement their meager cache of draft picks.. L.A. currently has one first-round pick that is tradable outright (either in 2031 or 2032) and just one second-rounder (in 2032). That makes a trade contingent… on another team vaulting on Knecht, the No. 17 pick of the 2024 draft who has yet to prove the kind of steal the Lakers thought they were getting.“On the other hand, Kevin O’Connor of Yahoo Sports reported that the Lakers are actively looking into methods to turn their one tradable first-round pick into numerous selections. O’Connor said:“With the Lakers, the word on the street is they’re trying to package Jarred Vanderbilt and Gabe Vincent together for a wing… Now, the really interesting thing with them is, they’ve been shopping around their future 2032 first-round pick for multiple first-round draft picks.”
The Lakers could stay active at the deadline by flipping Knecht, or making creative roster moves
Knecht is reportedly not far from getting selected in the first round. With a change of surroundings, a non-contender might take a chance on him demonstrating better development. At this point, the Lakers are reportedly hoping for the best. The Lakers may be able to trade more than one pick at the deadline this year if they convert their 2032 first-round pick into two or three lower picks. For instance, they would be able to trade their own 2026, 2028, and 2030 first-round picks if they move their 2032 pick and obtain picks in 2027 and 2029.They may also be able to use their expiring contracts to make several smaller deals. In that case, it appears that the Lakers will be busy in the upcoming week as they may try to find innovative ways to improve the roster. Also read: LeBron and Bronny James’ tentative comeback casts a shadow over Los Angeles Lakers’ preseason finale amidst health concerns
