“Its way too easy to climb”, Marvel Rivals top player frustrated on inflated Ranked System | Esports News

Top players in Marvel Rivals are complaining about the generous ranked system in Marvel Rivals, and how it is boosting below average players to GrandMaster. One such Marvel Rivals streamer @EskayOW commented that “ranked is genuinely horrible coinflip…”, and players are “climbing really high because they played a lot.” Here’s everything she said:
After months of its successful release, the player base is levelling up their skills and the ranked system doesn’t seem to correspond to a player’s skill level. Instead, it has become a metric of how much time a player is putting into the game. This has become a reason for frustration for the top level players as they often end up in lobbies with average players, causing them to lose the game at higher ranks.
Other players also commented on the issue, discussing NetEase Games’ decisions on mid-season ranked reset and a lack of placement matches. NetEase Games is aware of the inflated ranked system in Marvel Rivals, because of which they wanted to do a mid-season rank reset to even the rank distribution. However, the lack of placement matches and the generous ELO system is what seems to be the core problem.
How the Marvel Rivals ranked system is failing

Marvel Rivals has three in-game systems that make it much easier for a casual player to climb ranks. While these mechanics were intended to fix common issues faced in ranked in other games, it seems to be overdone in the case of Marvel Rivals and is in turn backfiring.
Following are the three systems implemented in Marvel Rivals Ranked that are boosting players to higher ranks.
- Players tend to gain more LP than they lose despite losing streaks. The LP earned from winning is higher than the LP lost from losing. This means if you play enough games with a 50% win rate, statistically keep earning LP and ranking up.
- Marvel Rivals’ Ranked System also has a generous demotion protection system. This grants the player up to two free losses before demoting them to a lower rank.
- There’s another mechanic in the game called the Chrono Shield that prevents the player from losing any points. The Chrono Shields charge up as you lose more games. Once fully charged, the next loss doesn’t count as it uses the chrono shield to prevent any loss in points.
While these systems individually have proven to function well in other games, implementing them all together in Marvel Rivals, is causing average players to be boosted to higher ranks.
