On July 7, at the All England Club in London, Grigor Dimitrov was ahead by two sets in his Round of 16 match against world No. 1 Jannik Sinner. But then, everything changed. Hours later, fans saw him post a photo from a hospital bed on Friday, July 11. His message mixed sadness and gratitude, leaving many wondering: what really happened, and how badly is he hurt?

What Grigor Dimitrov shared after his injury and hospital stay

Grigor Dimitrov was playing exceptional tennis on Centre Court on July 7. He won the first two sets 6‑3 and 7‑5 against Jannik Sinner, even as Jannik Sinner dealt with an elbow issue. At 2‑2 in the third set, Grigor Dimitrov served a powerful ace at around 96 mph, then cried out, “my pec, my pec,” and collapsed, clutching his right chest area.Medical staff rushed in, but Grigor Dimitrov was unable to continue and officially retired. The crowd gave him a standing ovation as he left the court. That same evening, Jannik Sinner, visibly concerned, praised Grigor Dimitrov’s performance and friendship: “He’s been so unlucky in the past couple of years… I hope he has a speedy recovery”.On Friday, July 11, Grigor Dimitrov shared a hospital photo on Instagram and X showing him in bed with a simple meal. In his message, he wrote: “Sometimes the heart wants to keep going… but the universe has a different plan for us,” and described the withdrawal as “one of the most painful moments of my career.” He added, “Thank you for the overwhelming wave of love… your messages have genuinely lifted me through these hard times. Grigor Dimitrov’s injury history and future plans

This injury is not Grigor Dimitrov’s first at a Grand Slam. Since Wimbledon 2024, he has withdrawn from five majors in a row, including the US Open, Australian Open, and French Open, all due to various physical issues. The Wimbledon 2025 incident adds a partial tear of his right pectoral muscle to that list. Actress Eiza Gonzalez, Dimitrov’s girlfriend since May, wrote in a supportive Instagram comment on July 8: “Love of my life… You are BEYOND outstanding… You’re a winner”.His coach, Jamie Delgado, spoke with the BBC on July 11, saying, “Completely gutted, disappointed, heartbroken… it’s getting harder to pick yourself up after these lows… This is the tournament he looks forward to the most”.According to some sources, Grigor Dimitrov must skip upcoming events: the Bastad ATP 250 (July 14–20), Toronto Masters (July 27–August 7), and Cincinnati Masters (August 7–18). He is expected to make a return at the US Open, starting August 24 in Queens, New York.
