Heatwave-like conditions prevail over parts of Goa

Panaji: Heatwave-like conditions prevailed over parts of Goa as Mormugao recorded a maximum temperature of 37.3°C for two consecutive days, which is 5.5C above normal values. The maximum temperature over Panaji, however, dropped by 2.6C on Thursday after being 35°C.
The India meteorological department (IMD) states that the heatwave criteria for Goa (a coastal station) is when the maximum temperature departure is 4.5C or more from normal. A heatwave may be described provided the actual maximum temperature is 37°C or more.
The IMD has issued an extended heat warning for Goa, forecasting that hot and humid conditions will continue until March 1. It has cautioned that temperatures in the state are expected to reach between 35 to 37 degrees celsius, especially during the peak hours of the day.
According to the IMD warning, there is a high probability of dehydration during the day, with additional risks of heat cramps and rashes. The advisory warns citizens to exercise caution and take appropriate measures to protect themselves from the heat, especially between 11am and 3pm. The IMD has further cautioned that dry conditions could lead to an increased risk of fire, with dry grass and vegetation potentially igniting.
To mitigate the impact of the ongoing heatwave-like conditions, the IMD has recommended that people avoid direct exposure to the sun during peak hours. If outdoor activities are unavoidable, it is advised to wear light, breathable clothing, use sunscreen, and keep hydrated. Special care should be taken by the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions to minimise health risks, it has said.
