Died by suicide in Pakistan jail, Ghurahu Bind’s mortal remains consigned to flames in Jaunpur | Varanasi News

VARANASI: The mortal remains of Ghurahu Bind, who died in a Karachi jail in Pakistan on March 25 by alleged suicide, were consigned to flames at Ramghat in Jaunpur in the early hours of Sunday. His son, Dheeraj, performed the last rites in the presence of hundreds of villagers, as well as officials from the district administration and police.
After travelling for over 27 hours from Amritsar, the mortal remains reached Bind’s parental village, Basiraha, in the Machhlishahr area, where fisheries department officials and police had already arrived around 2 am. The coffin containing Bind’s mortal remains could not be taken out of the ambulance due to decay, which was causing a foul smell, making it difficult for anyone to stand close to it for even a few minutes.
As a result, even the mourning family viewed the body from a distance. After a half-hour stay at Basiraha village, the mortal remains were taken to Ramghat, where the deceased’s eldest son, Dheeraj Bind, lit the pyre at dawn. Apart from Bind’s relatives and villagers, joint magistrate Kumar Saurabh, CO Pratima Verma, Tehsildar Ravi Ranjan Kashyap, and other officials, village head Mrityunjay Bind, and BJP leaders were also present at the funeral procession.
Bind, who worked for a fish contractor at Okha port in Gujarat, and seven others were caught by Pakistani rangers on February 8, 2022, for alleged territory violation and were lodged in jail. Due to alleged torture, Bind committed suicide in Karachi jail on March 25. His mortal remains reached the Wagah border on April 17, and the next day, they reached Amritsar.
Talking to TOI on Sunday, Jaunpur district magistrate Dinesh Chandra said that initially, efforts were made to airlift the body. However, as it started decaying and odour emanation began, it was decided to bring the body by road.
Before the arrival of his mortal remains, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath asked the Jaunpur DM to assist Bind’s family with most govt schemes under which benefiting the family is possible, including the zero poverty scheme.
The DM said that in view of the CM’s directives, the financial condition of Bind’s family was assessed by a team of officials. For benefits under schemes like PM housing, necessary formalities will be completed, while other schemes like widow pension, fishery, and social welfare departments would be given immediately. He added that correspondence will also be made with the Gujarat govt to request that the contractor for whom Bind worked also pay the prescribed compensations.
Before he was caught, Bind and his wife, Parvati, arranged the marriage of their three daughters, while one daughter, Santoshi, studied in the 12th grade. Only the mother and daughter lived in their mud house in Basiraha, and Bind’s two sons, Dheeraj and Neeraj, had also started staying in Mumbai to earn a livelihood.
