Did you know Rajinikanth once slept on the floor so Arvind Swamy could rest during ‘Thalapathi’ shoot? |
Actor Arvind Swamy has shared a quiet, deeply personal moment from the sets of his debut film that, years later, still defines Rajinikanth for him. Speaking recently, Arvind recalled how the superstar once chose to sleep on the floor rather than disturb him, a newcomer who had unknowingly fallen asleep on Rajinikanth’s bed during a shoot. The story has struck a chord online because it reflects Rajinikanth’s reputation for humility and respect, traits that fans have celebrated for decades alongside his towering screen presence.Rajinikanth and Arvind Swamy shared the screen in the 1991 film ‘Thalapathi’, directed by Mani Ratnam and also starring Mammootty. At the time, Arvind was just starting out and did not yet know the set etiquette and quiet hierarchies everyone else followed. That lack of awareness led to a moment he says he will never forget.
Early days on the sets of ‘Thalapathi’
Arvind shared the incident while speaking at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, where he looked back on his early career. He said he had arrived early one day for a shoot and was exhausted. Seeing a bed in a room, he lay down and fell asleep, not realizing the room belonged to Rajinikanth. “I woke up and saw Rajini sir sleeping on the ground. I had walked into his room and slept on the bed,” Arvind told the audience.According to Arvind, he was shocked and embarrassed by what he saw. He wondered why a superstar would choose the floor rather than ask him to move. The reason soon became clear. Rajinikanth had instructed his make-up artist not to wake the young actor. He did not want Arvind’s rest disturbed.
Why the moment stayed with Arvind Swamy
The action left a lasting impact. Arvind said it taught him a lesson that went far beyond cinema. To him, the moment had nothing to do with rank or seniority. He saw it as a small, thoughtful gesture. Rajinikanth could have had him moved right away, but he did the opposite. He let the room stay quiet and settled on the floor without making it an issue. The audience at the festival responded with loud applause when Arvind finished the story. The moment reinforced why Rajinikanth is often praised for his off-screen conduct as much as for his on-screen work.Rajinikanth was last seen in ‘Coolie’ and is currently working on ‘Jailer 2’. Arvind Swamy was most recently seen in ‘Gandhi Talks’, which released on January 30.
