Asha Bhosle reveals why she and Lata Mangeshkar always wore white sarees: ‘Aur colour pehnege toh aur kaale dikhengay’ | Hindi Movie News

Legendary singer-sisters Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar shared a bond that was often a topic of discussion. While their family connection was undeniable, their professional rivalry in the music industry added an intriguing layer to their relationship. Recently, Asha reminisced about how Lata maintained a formal approach in public while being more open at home. She also shed light on why they preferred to wear white sarees.
During a conversation on the podcast Couple of Things, Asha revealed why she and her sister Lata Mangeshkar always wore white sarees. “We thought white sarees looked good on our complexion. Aur colour pehnege toh aur kaale dikhengay (If we wore other colours, we would look darker). Later, I started wearing pink sarees, and Didi would give me a side-eye, but I began wearing colours along with pink,” she revealed.
Speaking about their equation inside and outside their home, Asha mentioned that Lata would be very normal at home but spoke formally and softly in public. They conversed in Marathi at home, and their relationship was quite smooth within the household.
Asha further shared insights into their professional connection, stating that they had no relation when it came to singing. “She was Lata Mangeshkar outside, and she had her own status beyond our home. Ghar pe baat hoti thi, par bahar baat-vaat karna matlab… (She would talk to us at home but not outside),” she added.
Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle remain two of Indian cinema’s most celebrated voices, their impact resonating across generations. Lata passed away in 2022 at the age of 92.
