It was a day of pride and emotions for Malayalam cinema as actress Urvashi received the National Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in ‘Ullozhukku’.Among the most heartfelt reactions came from her daughter, Tejalakshmi (fondly called Kunjatta), who accompanied her mother to the ceremony.Sharing a picture with Urvashi on Instagram, she wrote: “One of the most beautiful days of my life. A surreal and proud moment. Watching Amma receive the National Award for Best Supporting Actress for the second time felt like the biggest privilege of my life.” She also highlighted the significance of the evening, adding, “To witness that stage, to be there, and on top of it all, seeing our Lalettan being honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award representing Malayalam cinema. Truly a proud moment for all of us.”
Vijayaraghavan dedicates award to his father
Veteran actor Vijayaraghavan also found himself in the spotlight as he bagged the National Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Pookkaalam. The actor, who has been part of Malayalam cinema for over five decades, expressed gratitude in a heartfelt Facebook note: “71st National Award 2023 The best actor in supporting role for “Pookkalam” 53 years, countless characters, endless lessons — and tonight, this honor finds its way home again. The second National Award for our family, the first was won by my father. This one is for him, for the journey, and for everyone who stood by me. Thank you.”
Celebrating Malayalam cinema’s big night
Alongside Urvashi and Vijayaraghavan’s wins, ‘Ullozhukku’, directed by Christo Tomy, bagged Best Malayalam Film Award and all thanks to its moving storytelling. Mohandas Pallakkotti won Best Production Design for 2018, praised for authentically recreating the Kerala floods on a massive set. Midhun Murali received the Best Editing award for Pookkaalam. In the non-feature category, M.K. Ramdas earned a special mention for his documentary Nekal – Chronicle of the Paddy Man.
