The Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) heads into a crucial election on August 15. According to the latest updates, a new revelation has emerged from actor and former IC member Maala Parvathi. In an interview with Manorama News, Maala Parvathi stated that superstar Mohanlal was compelled to resign from AMMA’s leadership after joint secretary Baburaj refused to step down.Baburaj, she revealed, had been accused of sexual abuse by a junior artiste. According to her, Mohanlal had no choice but to vacate his post in protest. His resignation, along with others from the leadership team, had earlier been attributed to the fallout surrounding the Justice Hema Committee report. Now, Maala’s statement casts fresh light on the inner dynamics of the resignation.

Baburaj still in the race

Despite the serious allegation and the pressure to withdraw, Baburaj remains a candidate in the upcoming election, now eyeing the general secretary post.

Maala Parvathi did not hide her frustration at this move. She recalled how, in earlier instances, the association had acted firmly—removing those accused of misconduct from leadership roles. She pointed out how actor Dileep had been removed from the executive committee after being named in a high-profile case, and Vijay Babu had also stepped down following sexual assault allegations. “We expect Baburaj to do the same,” Maala said.

Debate grows around ethics in elections

As debates rage over whether individuals with such accusations should be allowed to run for positions of influence, actors Ansiba and Sarayu added their voices to the discussion. They noted that, like in politics, accusations alone have not always disqualified individuals from contesting.Meanwhile, as reported by On Manorama, records of 74 members have filed nominations for the AMMA election. This is the first time that the AMMA election is having these many candidates.
