MADURAI: A family trip to Kodaikanal Hills turned tragic in the early hours of Tuesday after a tourist van carrying 25 people from Madurai overturned near Dum Dum Rock, a popular viewpoint on the hill route.
The accident occurred around 2.30 am when the group, comprising residents of Vilacheri and Thirumangalam, was travelling through the hilly terrain.
All 25 occupants, including eight children, sustained injuries in the accident. They were rushed to the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) in Madurai for treatment.
Hospital authorities said that 23 of them sustained non-critical injuries and were being treated in the yellow zone. However, two women suffered severe head trauma and were placed in the red zone under ventilator support.
According to hospital sources, the identities of the critically injured women are yet to be confirmed. They are believed to be around 30 and 55 years old.

Police suspect the van may have lost control on a sharp curve near Dum Dum Rock, a stretch known for its steep gradients and narrow turns. Local residents and emergency personnel helped rescue the injured in the early morning hours and ensured their safe transport to Madurai.
