HARIDWAR: Taking cognisance of complaints received from Haridwar mayor Kiran Jaissal and other sources, Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has ordered an inquiry into the charges of corruption against former municipal commissioner Varun Chaudhari.
As per the allegations, Chaudhari had bought 35 bighas of land adjoining the dumping ground at Sarai village for Rs 36 crore. The land deal had started to raise eyebrows a few months after Jaissal took charge as the mayor.
As per a press note by the information bureau, the CM has directed that secretary Peya Jal, Ran Vir Singh Chauhan will conduct a detailed and impartial inquiry into the matter and submit an early report to the administration.”
The CM said, “Stringent action will be taken if an official or employee is found guilty,” adding that the government is firmly pursuing the policy of zero tolerance against corruption.
In the absence of a Nagar Nigam board, the erstwhile municipal commissioner was working as its administrator as well. In a bid to expand the area of the waste processing unit, he allegedly purchased 35 bighas of land for Rs 36 crore.
Denying the allegation against him, former civic commissioner Chaudhari said, “The purchase was made as per rules and with the permission of the administrator.”
