In a bombshell proclamation on his podcast titled “4th&1,” released recently , Newton offered his somewhat controversial thoughts on the future of baseball: “Baseball is like a — I hate to say it — a dying sport.

Cue Jazz Chisholm Jr. The young superstar in MLB and new sensation for the Miami Marlins is never one to let any throw go without a playful heat. So, to Newton’s apocalyptic prediction, Chisholm Jr. fired back with a well-calibrated, half-brimstone, half-laughter message: “Cam, I have one thing to say—am I? Oh, my bad. Am I going to be dead in 20 years? Like, you’ve got to let me know, because I will not let that go—ever. That’s never going to happen. Not if I’m alive, at least.”
And now: into Newton’s rather bold statement. The three-time Pro Bowler stated on his podcast that the WNBA could, by 2045, even surpass baseball in popularity. Yes, you read it: Cam Newton, a man who certainly did not pursue a career in baseball, is now predicting its gruesome demise. This is because, according to Newton, the WNBA will be preferred as fans would drift to women basketball instead.
Indeed the duration of the MLB season is one thing that sports fans would talk about – with it being a marathon of games that seem never-ending – and while it may be debated that such means the sport is “dying”, it would be too much to understand. There is still much cultural history and follow through with baseball throughout the world with diehard fans who eat it, sleep it, and breathe it.
But that is where the conversation muddles. Yes, the kids do tune in for nine innings every day, and yes, the MLB does have its issues with tapping into the likes of TikTok highlights and streaming obsessions. But “dying”? Come on, let’s slow the horses on that one. Baseball has weathered generations of such questioning, and it is not going to throw in the towel.
But hey-now that’s an opinion worth some merit with Newton. Is baseball having trouble holding on to that younger audience? Probably. Are some of the rules and marketing a little out-of-date? Maybe. Baseball is not dead; and with players like Chisholm Jr., bringing that well-needed flash back into the diamond, that sport’s fading into obscurity seems very slim these days.
