Major relief for Mumbai commuters as Metro Line 2B trial run begins
NEW DELHI: The trial run for a section of Mumbai Metro Line 2B, also known as the Yellow Line, began on Wednesday, covering a 5.5 km stretch between the Mandale car shed and Diamond Garden.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) confirmed that the segment includes five stations — Mandale, Mankhurd, BSNL, Shivaji Chowk, and Diamond Garden.
An MMRDA official said all civil and electrical works, including overhead wiring, had been completed, paving the way for operational trials. The ongoing trial phase will involve comprehensive static and dynamic testing of key systems, such as braking, acceleration, signalling, telecommunications, and energy usage, to assess system integration and safety.
Metro Line 2B is a 23.64-km-long corridor that will eventually connect DN Nagar in Andheri (western suburbs) to Mandale near Mankhurd (eastern suburbs). The line is part of the larger plan to expand Mumbai’s metro network.
Officials from Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL) stated that after the internal trial tests, the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) will evaluate the corridor. This will be followed by an inspection by an Independent Safety Assessor.
A final clearance will be given by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety after a thorough inspection. Public services will begin only after all safety and operational benchmarks are met.
Earlier, the 18.59-km-long Metro Line 2A, connecting Dahisar East and Andheri West, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as part of the city’s metro expansion.
