Stephen Currys career is defined by record-breaking moments, and he has done it again, adding another historic feat to his resume. On Thursday night against the Sacramento Kings, the Golden State Warriors superstar became the first player in NBA history to make 4,000 career three-pointers. It’s a milestone that once seemed unfathomable, quite synonymous with the idea of a player making over 400 three-pointers in a single season, which Curry also accomplished in 2015-16.

The Golden State Warriors standout star Stephen Curry’s road to 4,000 has been glorious. Back in his first NBA game on October 28, 2009, he attempted just one three-pointer and missed. Fast forward 16 seasons, and the idea of Curry failing to make a three in a game is almost laughable. Now, at 36 years old, he is still leading the league in made threes per game (4.5).
To put his dominance in perspective, James Harden— the second all-time leader in three-pointers made— trails Curry by more than 850. In fact, Harden is closer to ninth-place Paul George (2,349) than he is to Curry. Here is the list of top 10 NBA stars with the highest 3-pointers.

Rank Player 3-Pointers Made
1 Steph Curry 4,000
2 James Harden 3,127
3 Ray Allen 2,973
4 Damian Lillard 2,792
5 Klay Thompson 2,667
6 Reggie Miller 2,560
7 LeBron James 2,542
8 Kyle Korver 2,450
9 Paul George 2,349
10 Vince Carter 2,290

Before Curry entered the league, NBA teams attempted an average of just 18.1 three-pointers per game. Today, that number has doubled to 37.6.
Curry has made at least 250 three-pointers in each of his past five seasons and has hit over 300 in a season five times. For context, in the 2009-10 season, four entire teams failed to reach 400 total threes. Now, Curry alone surpasses that number, surprising everyone at the NBA.
The Warriors veteran has two years left on his current contract, but he has previously clarified that he has the desire to play beyond 2027. So, Curry certainly has a legitimate chance to hit 5,000 career threes.

His conditioning and ability to find open shots through constant movement make him an outlier. Despite being 36, he remains one of the league’s most feared scorers, averaging 24.5 points this season. Over the past 14 games, he has taken his game to another level, averaging 29.9 points while leading the Warriors to 12 wins in that span.
