Google Docs page setup controls how a document looks on screen, in a PDF and on paper. The right settings can prevent clipped tables, awkward page breaks and unexpected changes when someone prints or exports your file.

This guide explains how to choose between pages and pageless format, adjust margins, orientation, paper size and color, use section-specific settings, and make the same basic changes in the Android and iPhone apps.

Pages vs pageless: choose the format first

Before changing individual settings, decide how the document will be used. Google Docs offers two formats:

  • Pages shows page boundaries and supports margins, paper sizes, page breaks, headers, footers, page numbers, columns and print-focused layouts.
  • Pageless provides one continuous scrolling canvas. Text adapts to the viewer’s screen and wide tables can extend horizontally.

Use pages for reports, letters, proposals, assignments, forms and anything that will be printed or exported with a predictable page count. Pageless is often better for collaborative notes, planning documents and content that will mainly be read online.

How to open Page setup in Google Docs

  1. Open the document on a computer.
  2. Click File.
  3. Select Page setup.
  4. Choose Pages or Pageless at the top of the dialog.
  5. Change the available settings and click OK.

You can also switch quickly from the Format menu by choosing Switch to Pageless format or Switch to Pages format.

How to change margins in Google Docs

Margins control the empty space between your content and each edge of the page. They are available only in pages format.

  1. Go to File > Page setup.
  2. Make sure Pages is selected.
  3. Enter values for the top, bottom, left and right margins.
  4. Click OK.

The values use the measurement system associated with your Google account or document locale. For a standard document, equal margins create a balanced layout. Increase the left margin if a printed document needs binding space, but check the recipient’s requirements before changing a formal template.

Change margins for only one section

When a document has section breaks, Page setup can apply changes to a selected section instead of the whole file. Place the cursor in the relevant section, open Page setup, and choose the appropriate scope from the Apply to control.

If you need a new section, use Insert > Break and choose a section break. A page break moves content but does not create the same independent formatting control as a section break.

Use the ruler for a visual adjustment

The horizontal ruler can help adjust a selected section visually. Do not confuse the margin area with the blue indentation controls: moving an indent changes paragraph positioning, not the document’s true page margin.

How to change page orientation

Portrait is taller than it is wide and works for most text documents. Landscape is useful for wide tables, schedules, comparison charts and large images.

  1. Open File > Page setup.
  2. Select Pages.
  3. Under Orientation, choose Portrait or Landscape.
  4. Choose whether to apply it to the whole document or a selected section, when available.
  5. Click OK.

Using a separate section lets you place one landscape table inside an otherwise portrait document. Add section breaks before and after that content, then change the orientation for the middle section.

How to change paper size

Paper size affects line wrapping, page count and printing. Open File > Page setup, select pages format and choose the required size from the Paper size menu.

Letter is common in the United States and Canada, while A4 is widely used in the United Kingdom, Australia and Europe. Choose the format expected by your audience before finalizing tables, images and page breaks. Changing it late can reflow the entire document.

How to change page color

In pages format, Page setup includes a page color option. Choose a color, confirm the setting and review text contrast throughout the document.

Light backgrounds are generally easier to read and print. Dark or saturated page colors can consume significant ink and may reduce accessibility. If the file is intended for sharing online, export a PDF and check that links, images and contrast remain clear.

Pageless documents do not have individual pages, but their background color can still be changed through the pageless settings.

How to switch to pageless format

  1. Open File > Page setup.
  2. Select Pageless.
  3. Choose a background color if needed.
  4. Click OK.

In pageless mode, use View > Text width to choose narrow, medium or wide text. This is a personal viewing preference: collaborators can choose a different width without changing yours.

What disappears in pageless format?

Pageless format does not display or support several page-dependent features, including headers, footers, page numbers and columns. Existing headers, footers or watermarks are not necessarily deleted when you switch; Google says they become visible again if you return to pages format.

Wide tables are easier to view in pageless documents because they can scroll horizontally. If your work uses structured tables, you may also find our guide to creating dropdown lists in Google Docs helpful for consistent status and category fields.

Set your preferred layout as the default

In the Page setup dialog on a computer, Set as default applies the chosen settings to new documents you create. It does not reformat existing files.

Use this only when you regularly need the same configuration. For example, a US-based team may prefer Letter pages, while an organization serving European clients may standardize on A4. If you frequently produce both, templates can be safer than changing the account-wide default.

Change page setup on Android

  1. Open the document in the Google Docs app.
  2. Tap the edit button.
  3. Tap the three-dot More menu.
  4. Select Page setup.
  5. Change orientation, paper size or page color.

To switch between pages and pageless, use the same Page setup screen and turn the Pageless option on or off. Margins are not listed among Google’s mobile page settings, so use the desktop version when exact margins matter.

Turn on Print layout from the More menu to preview page boundaries while editing.

Change page setup on iPhone or iPad

  1. Open a document in the Google Docs app.
  2. Tap the three-dot More menu.
  3. Tap Page setup.
  4. Choose orientation, paper size or page color.

The Pageless switch is also available in Page setup. For detailed margin control and section-specific formatting, open the document in the desktop web version.

Common Google Docs page setup problems

Margins and orientation are unavailable

The document is probably in pageless format. Switch to pages format, then reopen Page setup.

Headers or page numbers disappeared

They are hidden in pageless mode. Switch back to pages format to display them again.

Only part of the document changed

A section-specific scope may have been selected. Open Page setup from the affected section and check the Apply to option. Hidden section breaks can be displayed from the View menu.

A table no longer fits after changing paper size

Changing paper size or margins changes the available width. Resize columns, reduce cell padding, switch that section to landscape, or use pageless format if the document is not intended for print.

The PDF looks different from the editor

Before exporting, confirm the correct page size and orientation, inspect print layout, and review every page break. Font substitutions, oversized images and tables can also alter pagination. Download the PDF and check the actual file rather than relying only on the editor view.

Practical setup recommendations

  • Business letter: Pages, portrait, Letter or A4 based on the recipient.
  • Formal report: Pages with consistent margins, headers and page numbers.
  • Wide comparison table: Landscape section or pageless format.
  • Collaborative notes: Pageless with medium text width.
  • Document review: Keep the original page format before using Google Docs’ document comparison feature, so formatting differences are easier to interpret.

Frequently asked questions

Can one Google Doc contain portrait and landscape pages?

Yes. Add section breaks around the content and apply landscape orientation only to that section.

Can I set different margins on different pages?

Margins can differ by section. Create section breaks, then apply the required margins to each section.

Why can’t I add page numbers in pageless mode?

Pageless documents have no fixed pages, so page numbers, headers and footers are unavailable. Switch to pages format.

Does changing Page setup affect collaborators?

Document format, paper size, margins, orientation and page color affect the shared document. Pageless text width is different: Google treats it as an individual viewing preference.

Can I change margins in the Google Docs mobile app?

Google’s mobile help lists orientation, paper size and page color, but not margin controls. Use Google Docs on a computer for exact margin settings.

Conclusion

Start Google Docs page setup by choosing the format that matches the final use. Pages gives you print control, while pageless makes wide, screen-first documents easier to work with. Once that choice is correct, set paper size, margins and orientation early so the document does not unexpectedly reflow just before sharing or export.
