When Windows 11 opens a file in the wrong program, you usually do not need to uninstall anything. You can change the default application for a specific file extension, link type or application from Settings.

This guide covers the main methods, including how to change your browser, PDF reader, photo viewer and other file associations.

Quick answer

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps > Default apps.
  3. Search for an app, file extension such as .pdf, or protocol.
  4. Select the current default.
  5. Choose the application you prefer and confirm the change.

Method 1: Set defaults for one application

Use this method when you want to see all file and link types associated with a program.

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > Default apps.
  2. Search for and select the application.
  3. Review the file extensions and protocols shown.
  4. Select an association you want to change.
  5. Choose the preferred app.

Changing one association does not necessarily change every type the program supports. Review the list rather than assuming one selection controls everything.

Method 2: Change the app for a file extension

If only one kind of file opens incorrectly, search for its extension. Common examples include .pdf, .jpg, .png, .txt and .mp4.

  1. Open Default apps.
  2. Enter the extension, including the dot.
  3. Select the matching result.
  4. Choose the new program.

This is more precise than changing several associations for an entire app.

Method 3: Use Open with from File Explorer

  1. Right-click a file.
  2. Select Open with > Choose another app.
  3. Select the program you want.
  4. If Windows offers an option to always use that app for the file type, select it.

If the application is not shown, choose the option to view more apps or locate an installed program. Only browse to an executable when you trust the software and know where it was installed.

How to change the default browser

Open Settings > Apps > Default apps, select your preferred browser and choose the available option to make it the default. Review HTTP, HTTPS and common web-file associations if links still open elsewhere.

An application may also display its own “make default” button, but Windows Settings remains the clearest place to confirm the result.

How to change the default PDF reader

Search Default apps for .pdf, select the current application, and choose your preferred PDF reader. This changes what happens when you open local PDF files; browser settings can separately control PDFs opened from websites.

What if your preferred app is missing?

  • Confirm that the application is installed for your Windows account.
  • Open the app once so it can complete first-run setup.
  • Install pending updates for the app and Windows.
  • Check whether the program supports the file type.
  • Restart Settings or restart the computer.

Do not download unknown “file opener” tools merely because Windows cannot find an association. Use the software publisher’s official website or Microsoft Store.

What if Windows keeps changing the default?

Update both Windows and the affected application, then set the association again. If the problem continues, repair the application before resetting it. Our guide explains how to repair or reset a Windows 11 app.

Frequently asked questions

Can one extension have different default apps?

Windows assigns one default at a time, but you can right-click an individual file and use Open with when you want a different program occasionally.

Does changing a default uninstall the old app?

No. It only changes which program opens that file or link type automatically.

Why do links and HTML files use different apps?

Protocols such as HTTP and file extensions such as .html are separate associations. Review both when necessary.

Can I reset everything?

Windows includes reset options on the Default apps page. Use them cautiously because they can replace several personal choices at once.
