Donald Trump’s definition of woman sparks laughter. Here’s why
US President Donald Trump sparked laughter during a recent press conference when a reporter asked him to define what a woman is. The question came as Trump spoke following the swearing-in of Alina Habba, a longtime ally, as the US attorney for New Jersey.
The reporter started the conversation by acknowledging Trump’s role in appointing women to key positions in his administration, including chief of staff Susie Wiles, press secretary Karoline Leavitt, and attorney general Pam Bondi. He then asked, “Since Democrats seem to struggle answering this question, I want to ask you, what is a woman and why is it important that we understand the difference between men and women?”
The room erupted in laughter as Trump confidently declared that the question was an “easy” one to answer.
“A woman is somebody who, under certain circumstances, can have a baby. She has equality. A woman is a person who is much smarter than a man—I’ve always found. A woman is a person who doesn’t even give a man a chance of success,” he said, drawing chuckles from people around him.
However, Trump quickly shifted to a more serious tone, using the moment to address the controversial topic of transgender athletes competing in women’s sports.
“A woman is also someone who, in many cases, has been treated unfairly. The idea that men can compete in women’s sports is not only ridiculous but deeply unjust. It disrespects and demeans women,” he said.
Without naming specific individuals, Trump referenced a Democratic lawmaker advocating for the inclusion of transgender athletes in women’s sports. He then quipped that Democrats pushing for such policies would struggle to win future elections.
Under Trump’s administration, several measures were introduced to push back against gender ideology. He signed an executive order titled “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports,” which bars educational institutions receiving federal funding from allowing transgender athletes to compete against biological women. Another order, “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government,” established a policy recognising only two genders at the federal level.
The US department of education also launched an investigation into California’s department of education over alleged violations of the Family Educational Rights Privacy Act (FERPA). This followed the enactment of a California law restricting schools from informing parents about a child’s gender identity.
In response, California governor Gavin Newsom’s spokesperson, Elana Ross, told Fox News Digital that “Parents continue to have full, guaranteed access to their student’s education records, as required by federal law.”
Wrapping up his remarks, Trump reiterated his appreciation for women, saying, “Women are incredible people who do so much for our country. We love our women, and we’re going to take care of them.”
