British couple detained in Iran after ignoring warnings: Family addresses ‘distressing situation,’ seeks safe return

A British couple, who ignored the requests of their friends and families and still entered Iran, has been held captive in the war-torn country.
Craig and Lindsay Foreman entered Iran from Armenia on December 30 with their faith that good and kind humans are everywhere in the world but that philosophy lives a short life. They stayed in Tabriz, Tehran, and Isfahan but couldn’t reach to their next hotel in Kerman.
They were subsequently detained in January on security-related charges, despite the Foreign Office’s explicit warnings against travel to Iran, Daily Mail reported.
Their family released a statement today expressing deep worry and commitment to securing their release. The couple had dismissed concerns, maintaining their conviction that people worldwide are fundamentally decent and pursuing meaningful lives.
Before their journey, they acknowledged it as “one of the most challenging—and let’s be honest, slightly scary—sections of our journey” whilst deciding to proceed.
Dr Foreman stated: “Yes, we’re aware of the risks. But we also know the rewards of meeting incredible people, hearing their stories, and seeing the breathtaking landscapes of these regions could far outweigh the fear.”
She continued: “From the vast deserts of Iran to the towering peaks of Pakistan, we hope to share the beauty, hospitality, and humanity that often go unnoticed. We’re carrying your love and good wishes with us, so stay tuned for updates from this unforgettable part of our adventure.”
The Foreign Office (FCDO) confirmed their engagement with Iranian authorities and provision of consular assistance. Iranian state media first reported their detention in Kerman, sharing a blurred photograph of their meeting with British ambassador Hugo Shorter.
The pair had previously appeared on Channel 4’s ‘A New Life in the Sun’, which documented their relocation from Sussex to Spain’s Andalusia region. On January 3, Dr Foreman shared a photograph with a religious leader, both displaying a traditional gesture of respect.
Their social media activity ceased after January 3, though they continued appearing in their guide’s posts until January 21. Dr Foreman had been conducting research for a presentation planned in Brisbane, exploring human nature and meaningful living.
The family’s statement, released through the Foreign Office, emphasised their focus on securing the couple’s safe return and requested privacy during this difficult period.
In a statement from the family of Craig and Lindsay Foreman, they said their arrest had “caused significant concern” and that they were “united in our determination to secure their safe return.”
They said: “We would like to take this opportunity to address the distressing situation concerning Craig and Lindsay Foreman who are currently being detained in Kerman, Iran. This unexpected turn of events has caused significant concern for our entire family, and we are deeply focused on ensuring their safety and well-being during this trying time,” the message read.
“We are actively engaging with the British government and relevant authorities, working diligently to navigate the complexities of this matter. The family are united in our determination to secure their safe return. We truly appreciate the outpouring of support from friends, family, and the community, which has provided us with strength and encouragement as we face this ordeal. In light of the circumstances, we kindly ask for the utmost respect regarding our family’s privacy,” it added.
