What is ‘Adolescence’ about?
Adolescence can be seen as a troubling indication of the possible consequences of incel culture and the online radicalization of young men. Although the story of ‘Adolescence’ wasn’t based directly on real events, Graham and his co-creator Jack Thorne were inspired by the global phenomenon of gender-based violence. In a recent conversation with Tudum, Graham recounted a disturbing incident involving a young boy (who allegedly) fatally stabbed a girl. “There was an incident where a young boy (allegedly) stabbed a girl.”
He further shared, “It shocked me. I was thinking, ‘What’s going on? What’s happening in society where a boy stabs a girl to death? What’s the inciting incident here?’ And then it happened again, and it happened again, and it happened again. I really just wanted to shine a light on it, and ask, ‘Why is this happening today? What’s going on? How have we come to this?’”
