What is ‘Adolescence’ about?

Adolescence can be seen as a troubling indication of the possible consequences of incel culture and the online radicalization of young men. The series follows the story of a 13-year-old boy named Jamie Miller. He gets arrested on suspicion of murder after CCTV footage showed him stabbing a female classmate, Katie Leonard, to death.
The narrative follows Jamie and his family, starting from the police interrogation room, moving through their school, and ending at the youth psychiatric facility where he waits for his trial. In the final episode, the story jumps to a year later, showing Jamie as he prepares to plead guilty. Meanwhile, his family struggles to restore some semblance of normal life.

Owen Cooper, playing Jamie, is a newcomer to the industry. According to IMDb, he has a lot of new projects in the pipeline. One of his much-awaited characters is young Heathcliff in Emerald Fennell’s 2026 adaptation of Wuthering Heights.
Another important role in the series is of Jamie’s father, Eddie, who has been played by the series co-creator Stephen Graham. He has been nominated for a whopping eight BAFTA Awards. His other renowned works include ‘Peaky Blinders,’ ‘Boiling Point’ and ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.’
Is ‘Adolescence’ based on a true story?
Although the story of ‘Adolescence’ wasn’t based directly on real events, Graham and his co-creator Jack Thorne were inspired by the global phenomenon of gender-based violence. In a recent conversation with Tudum, Graham recounted a disturbing incident involving a young boy (who allegedly) fatally stabbed a girl. “There was an incident where a young boy (allegedly) stabbed a girl.”
He further shared, “It shocked me. I was thinking, ‘What’s going on? What’s happening in society where a boy stabs a girl to death? What’s the inciting incident here?’ And then it happened again, and it happened again, and it happened again. I really just wanted to shine a light on it, and ask, ‘Why is this happening today? What’s going on? How have we come to this?’”

Though it might be tempting to view the actions of men who commit violence against women as purely evil, the show ‘Adolescence’ brings to light the hidden details, the things that happen in the grey area, as life is not just black and white. It illustrates how social media’s global influence and the increasing acceptance of cultural misogyny contribute to harmful messages, shaping the brief of societal roles in children. The show talks about the lesser-known evil and highlights the disturbing details that society very conveniently ignores.
