Yash Chopra helped Shah Rukh Khan settle ‘Om Shanti Om’ rift with Manoj Kumar: Manish Goswami says, ‘He wanted one rupee as damages’

Following the passing of veteran actor Manoj Kumar on April 4, his brother Manish Goswami reflected on a notable incident that once caused a rift between the late actor and Bollywood icons Shah Rukh Khan and Farah Khan. The issue stemmed from a spoof scene in the 2007 film Om Shanti Om, directed by Farah, where Shah Rukh’s character mimicked Manoj Kumar’s signature style. Although intended as a humorous tribute, the scene did not sit well with the legendary actor.
In a recent interaction on Vickey Lalwani’s YouTube channel, Manish shared how deeply the spoof had upset Manoj at the time. “He did not pursue it. He said, ‘I don’t want any money. I want a defamation case only for one rupee,’” Manish said. However, the situation was eventually diffused when both Farah and Shah Rukh visited the actor personally to make amends—an effort facilitated by the late filmmaker Yash Chopra.
Manish confirmed that they came home to apologise and acknowledged Yash Chopra’s critical role in resolving the issue. “Yash Chopra saab played an instrumental role in that.”
Manoj was disturbed by the scene in the film and stood firmly by his beliefs. “It was very nice of all of them to come and apologise. Things have been sorted out,” he noted.
Shah Rukh Khan had also addressed the matter back in 2007 during a conversation with NDTV. He apologised for hurting Manoj and shared the effort he made to settle the issue.
Following Manoj Kumar’s demise, Shah Rukh paid tribute through a post on X (formerly Twitter), acknowledging the iconic actor’s contributions to Indian cinema. “Manoj Kumar ji made films that uplifted our country, our cinema, and focused on unity with unmatched sincerity. A legend in every sense. His films shaped an era and left a mark on our cinema. Thank you, sir. You will always be ‘Bharat’ to us.”
