A new Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister study based on Household Consumption Expenditure Survey 2023-24 reveals households, including the bottom 40%, spending less on food and more on durables and services. The shift is driving convergence across states and income tiers, reshaping India’s consumption landscape

Over the last decade, Indian households have gradually altered the way they spend and the kinds of products they own.
This is the central finding of the new Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES) 2023-24 and the accompanying analysis by the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister.
