‘The Diplomat’ star John Abraham picks his side in the Russia-Ukraine War: I say this on record

Actor John Abraham has shared his views on the Russia-Ukraine war, saying he supports Russia and believes NATO expansion is to blame for the conflict. He made these comments while promoting his new film, ‘The Diplomat’, which is currently in cinemas.
In an interview with Aaj Tak, Abraham spoke about his admiration for Russia, saying, “I’m a huge fan of Russia, I say this on record.”
He explained that while he does not support war, he understands Russia’s position. “I side with Russia because… of course, you don’t want war. Neither do I want people of Ukraine to die, not the people of Russia. But Russia has been screaming for 30 years asking NATO not to come. Nobody was listening. Finally they did it.”
The ‘Vedaa’ actor also praised India’s neutral stance on the conflict and said the country has the right to make its own decisions, such as buying Russian oil. He called External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar the “poster boy of Indian diplomacy.”
John’s latest film, ‘The Diplomat’, directed by Shivam Nair, is based on a true story. It follows the life of Uzma Ahmad, an Indian woman who was allegedly tricked into travelling to Pakistan, forced to marry at gunpoint, and abused. The film shows how Indian diplomat J.P. Singh, played by Abraham, helped bring her home safely in 2017. Sadia Khateeb stars as Uzma Ahmad, delivering a powerful performance as a woman fighting for her freedom.
‘ The Diplomat’ was released on 14 March 2025, during the Holi festival. According to the Sacnilk report, the film earned about Rs. 4 crore on its opening day. On the second day, its earnings increased by 12%, making around Rs 4.5 crore. The film is expected to perform even better over the weekend.
