‘Superboys of Malegaon’ writer Varun Grover addresses the ‘Writer Baap Hai’ dialogue from the trailer: ‘Salim and Javed redefined industry norms’ | Hindi Movie News

The makers released the trailer of ‘Superboys of Malegaon‘, directed by Reema Kagti, on Wednesday (February 12). The film is inspired by the true story of Nasir Shaikh, who established a small-scale film production business in Malegaon, Maharashtra.
At the trailer launch event, the film’s writer, Varun Grover, spoke about the evolving significance of writers in the film industry. Referring to a particular line from the trailer, where Vineet’s character states, “Writer Baap Hota Hai,” Grover was asked whether writers still hold such authority in the industry. In response, he compared the film industry to a century-old “dinosaur,” implying that it is slow-moving and weighed down by traditional structures.
“‘Writer Baap Hai’ was undoubtedly true in the era of Salim and Javed, who redefined industry norms. They commanded immense respect as writers. Though that phase hasn’t entirely returned, the expansion of filmmaking platforms has certainly brought greater attention to storytelling and the power of narratives,” he told The Indian Express.
Producer Ritesh Sidhwani highlighted the crucial role of writers in filmmaking, emphasising that without their work, the entire industry—from characters to production and direction—would not exist. He acknowledged that while it took time to recognise their importance, writers are the true foundation of cinema.
At the same press meet, trade analyst Komal Nahta also shared a podcast anecdote in which Zoya Akhtar revealed that Aamir Khan, after hearing the ‘Talaash’ script, insisted on doubling the writer’s pay. He stressed that while writers remain underpaid, growing audience awareness is gradually bringing their contributions into the spotlight.
‘Superboys of Malegaon’ features Aadarsh Gourav, Shashank Arora, and Vineet Kumar Singh in pivotal roles. It is set to hit cinemas on February 28.
