Srijit Mukherji reveals the inspiration for the ‘Killbill Society’ is Angelina Jolie’s real-life suicide attempt |

Srijit Mukherji, the director of ‘Hemlock Society,’ revealed his inspiration behind ‘Killbill Society’ – the real-life incident of Angelina Jolie’s suicide attempt. The ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ actress shared that she had planned her murder at the age of 22.
Mukherji’s inspiration
In an interview with Hindustan Times, Mukherji expressed that his team were searching for an appropriate sequel for the acclaimed film ‘Hemlock Society,’ and they came across the famed actor’s incident on Twitter. “We were waiting for the right plot, and on erstwhile Twitter, we came across this real-life incident involving Angelina Jolie’s life where she had hired a contract killer at the age of 19 to kill herself,” the filmmaker cited.
“She wanted it to look like a suicide but also wanted to make it look like a shootout for her family. Of course, the contract killer asked her to sleep over it, and she changed her mind, and the rest is history,” Mukherji added.
Furthermore, talking about the incident, Mukherji stated, “Just the uniqueness of it, the quirkiness of it. Also, the fact that if I had imagined such a plot myself, people would have dismissed it as too radical or too unrealistic. Thankfully, it actually happened, so it made my life easier. Also, the themes of suicide and assisted suicide are close to Hemlock, which is why I thought this could go ahead. Of course, there are twists and turns in this story, but the seed idea remains this.”
Angelina Jolie’s suicide attempt
In a 2003 interview with The Face, Jolie expressed that she had hired a hitman to murder her while struggling with suicidal thoughts. Further, Angelina stated that her family would have an easier time accepting her demise. “I was very aware that so many people around me, like my mother, would feel as though they didn’t give enough or do enough if I’d taken my own life. So my solution to that was if someone else had taken my life – like in a ‘robbery’ – then it would be murder, and it wouldn’t be that anyone would feel they’d let me down,” she said.
