Shreya Ghoshal on guiding reality show participants and nurturing young talent: Success doesn’t come overnight
Shreya Ghoshal returns as a judge for the 16th season of Indian Idol: Yaadon Ki Playlist, bringing with her a deep appreciation for music’s timeless legacy. Looking back at the magic of the past, the singer says, “For me, the 60s and 70s were truly the golden era. It was a time of extraordinary talent, lyrical beauty and musical richness. Every decade has produced its share of greats, from the 80s and 90s to the early 2000s, but memories are deeply personal and shaped by what we grow up listening to. Music from our childhood and teenage years leaves the strongest impression. I often revisit that period for inspiration, not just for its melodies but also for the incredible dedication musicians had towards their craft.”With music reality shows now serving as key platforms for emerging talent, the singer talks about how young artistes can sustain themselves beyond the initial spotlight. She says, “My only advice to young artistes coming through reality shows or social media is to keep at it. Success doesn’t happen overnight. Every bit of learning counts.”She also comments on how the music landscape has evolved. She says, “Today, it is not just about film music anymore. Independent music and various digital platforms have opened up exciting opportunities. You have to keep discovering yourself, your uniqueness, and what sets you apart. That is the toughest part. When I meet young talent who are still figuring things out, I relate to them because I also entered the industry very young and inexperienced. It takes years of shaping and growing. If you lower your expectations and focus on the art, you will find peace and purpose.”
Emphasising the importance of meaningful artistry, Shreya concludes, “Listeners connect with artistes who make them feel something. Especially today, when urban life is so chaotic, music is one of the few things that heal.”
