Sanam Teri Kasam beats Loveyapa and Badass Ravikumar on re-release, collects twice as its lifetime earnings from 2016 run

In 2016, director duo Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru crafted the poignant romantic drama Sanam Teri Kasam, starring Harshvardhan Rane and Mawra Hocane. The film, despite its emotional depth and a well-received soundtrack, struggled commercially, opening to Rs 1.3 crore on Day 1 and concluding its first week with Rs 8.71 crore. However, it faltered in subsequent weeks, culminating in a lifetime domestic collection of approximately Rs 9 crore, earning it the status of a box-office flop.
But fast forward to February 7, 2025 – nine years after its initial release – the film has unexpectedly roared back to life. Re-released in theaters, Sanam Teri Kasam opened to a staggering Rs 5.14 crore, more than half of its first-week earnings from 2016. The momentum continued on Day 2 (or Day 3292 from its original release), raking in Rs 6.22 crore, which astonishingly surpassed its entire lifetime collection from the first run. According to trade reports from Sacnilk, Sunday’s figures added another Rs 6.25 crore, pushing the total re-release earnings to approximately Rs 18 crore. This has now taken the cumulative box office collection of the film to around Rs 25 crore.
What has truly bewildered market analysts is Sanam Teri Kasam outperforming other February 7 releases, including Junaid Khan-Khushi Kapoor’s much-hyped Loveyapa and Himesh Reshammiya’s Badass Ravikumar. While Sanam Teri Kasam secured over Rs 6 crore on Sunday, Loveyapa and Badass Ravikumar trailed significantly with Rs 1.65 crore and Rs 1.5 crore, respectively. The phenomenon has sparked discussions about the potential of re-releases, though not all films have been able to replicate such a dramatic box-office revival.
Interestingly, in September 2024, Soham Rockstar Entertainment officially announced a sequel to Sanam Teri Kasam. Producer Deepak Mukut shared a post featuring Harshvardhan Rane, with the caption: “Sanam Teri Kasam 2 is officially happening! After the epic love story of the first film, we’re back with more! Stay tuned for updates!” The announcement was met with overwhelming excitement from fans, many of whom requested a re-release of the original film in 2025.
Fueling this enthusiasm, Harshvardhan Rane himself took to social media on January 23, sharing a poster of Sanam Teri Kasam with a call to action, “To re-release Sanam Teri Kasam part 1, we should tag Deepak Mukut Sir and request him to re-release it on 7th Feb 2025 (Valentine Week). Express your reasons in comments and tag him. I will also go to his office tomorrow morning and show him this!”
While some industry insiders speculate that this resurgence might be a well-coordinated PR campaign, there’s no denying that Sanam Teri Kasam’s second innings has laid the perfect groundwork for the sequel. With re-releases becoming a trend in Indian cinema, this unexpected success story might inspire similar revivals of beloved yet underappreciated films.
