Blocked vents or long use without breaks make internal parts glow red-hot, igniting nearby curtains or rugs. The National Fire Protection Association says space heaters cause 43% of home heating fires, with 85% of deaths linked to them.It is advised to keep three feet clear of flammables and never leave them on unattended, says the US Consumer Product Safety Commission
