Former Bollywood actress Mamta Kulkarni has resigned from her position as Mahamandaleshwar of the Kinnar Akhada following intense backlash and internal disputes within the religious group. The decision comes after her appointment was questioned, with critics citing her past in the film industry and alleged criminal links.
Announcing her resignation through an Instagram video, Mamta Kulkarni stated, “Main Mahamandaleshwar Yamai Mamta Nandagiri, main iss post se istifa de rahi hoon. Aaj Kinnar Akhade ya dono akhade ke beech jo mujhe leke problems ho rahi hain. Main ek Sadhvi thi 25 saal se aur main Sadhvi hi rahungi. (“I am Mahamandaleshwar Yamai Mamta Nandagiri, and I am resigning from this post. Today, the issues arising between the Kinnar Akhada and both Akhadas regarding me have led to this decision. I have been a Sadhvi for 25 years, and I will remain a Sadhvi.”) “
She further clarified her departure from Bollywood, saying, “Bollywood ko maine 25 saal pehle chhoda. Main apne aap gayab rahi. Warna makeup se, Bollywood se itna door kaun rehta hai?(“I left Bollywood 25 years ago. I stayed away on my own. Otherwise, who stays so far from makeup and Bollywood?”)”.
Her appointment had sparked controversy, especially after the Kinnar Akhada expelled both Kulkarni and her mentor, Acharya Lakshmi Narayan Tripathi. Transgender Kathavachak Jagatguru Himangi Sakhi Maa had raised concerns, stating to ANI, “Mamta Kulkarni has been made Mahamandaleshwar for publicity. Society knows her past very well. She was even jailed in the past in connection with drug cases. This needs investigation.”
Meanwhile, Mamta’s video post was soon flooded with comments. One comment read, “Mamta Kulkarni ji duniya ka najriye hi kharab hai ab apni najar mein sahi rahiye bus.” Another comment read, “Aap ekdam sehi ho Maa…Baba Mahakal hai wo sab dekh rahe hai..so wo sehi karange aap k sath.. AAP bas tuto maat Maa.”
