Jeethu Joseph on ‘Drishyam 3’: ‘Mohanlal conveyed the sequel idea’; climax was penned first, not the script | Malayalam Movie News

Director Jeethu Joseph recently opened up about ‘Drishyam 3’, one of the most anticipated sequels in Indian cinema. Interestingly, the spark for the third installment didn’t come from the filmmaker himself. It was none other than Mohanlal. The actor first asked if a third part was possible after watching ‘Drishyam 2’ at Jeethu’s home theatre. As revealed during an interview with Mathrubhumi, at the time, Jeethu hadn’t committed to the idea but shared a rough concept for the climax. “If Georgekutty returns, I want the climax to be a certain way,” Jeethu told Mohanlal. Lalettan liked the idea and encouraged him to explore it further — and that seed has now grown into a full-blown project.
Climax first, script later
Unlike conventional writing processes, Jeethu revealed that it was the climax of Drishyam 3 that came to him first — not the story. Since then, the script has slowly been taking shape. “I was even writing parts of it this morning,” he shared. Despite the buzz around simultaneous Hindi and Malayalam versions, nothing has been finalized. Legal complications delayed the Hindi version, and while producers are interested, Jeethu is focusing on finishing the Malayalam screenplay first.Interestingly, the director has received countless emails suggesting twists and storylines for the film — all of which he deleted without reading. “I don’t want my creative process to be influenced or distracted,” he clarified.
Four films in one year
‘Drishyam 3’ is just one of four projects Jeethu is juggling in 2025. The first to release is ‘Mirage’, an emotional thriller starring Aparna Balamurali and Asif Ali. There’s also ‘Valathu Vasathe Kallan’ with Biju Menon and Joju George, and a legal drama starring Fahadh Faasil scripted by Advocate Shanti Mayadevi expected to begin filming in December. Meanwhile, Jeethu Joseph’s previous outing was the Basil Joseph starrer ‘Nunakkuzhi’.
