Fawad Khan and Vaani Kapoor’s ‘Abir Gulaal’ might miss release date following Pahalgam terror attack; Theatres hesitant to screen ‘film with Pakistani actor’: Report

Pakistani actor Fawad Khan’s much-awaited return to Indian cinema may face a delay. His first Hindi film in years, ‘Abir Gulaal’, was scheduled for release on May 9, but due to recent tragic events, the release date might be pushed back. The film, which also stars Vaani Kapoor, is now under scrutiny due to the Pahalgam terror attack, and theatre owners are concerned about the film’s reception amid the current political climate.
Theatres hesitant to screen the film
According to a Hindustan Times report, in the wake of the attack, many exhibitors are reluctant to screen films that feature Pakistani actors, fearing a backlash from audiences. The production house behind ‘Abir Gulaal’ is trying to negotiate with cinema owners, but it seems unlikely that the film will be released on May 9. “The production house is trying to negotiate with them, but it looks unlikely that ‘Abir Gulaal’ will release on May 9 for now,” the report mentioned. “The film’s release may be pushed back until things are sorted. But when that will happen is uncertain as theatres do not want to take a film with a Pakistani actor now.”
‘Abir Gulaal’ was intended to be Fawad’s big return to Indian cinema after a long gap. He was previously seen in Bollywood films like ‘Khoobsurat’ and ‘Kapoor & Sons’.
The Terror Attack in Pahalgam
On April 22, 2025, terrorists opened fire on tourists at Baisaran, a popular tourist spot near Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, often called ‘mini Switzerland’ for its beautiful views. The attack took place around 3 PM, killing 26 people and injuring many more, as reported by NDTV. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls to boycott Pakistani artists and their films, including ‘Abir Gulaal’.
Bollywood celebrities condemn the attack
In the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack, many Bollywood celebrities have expressed their shock and anger on social media. Actor Akshay Kumar shared his sadness on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “Horrified to know of the terror attack on tourists in Pahalgam. Sheer evil to kill innocent people like this. Prayers for their families.”
Vicky Kaushal also posted on Instagram, “Can’t imagine the pain of the family members who lost their loved ones in the absolutely inhumane act of terrorism in Pahalgam. My deepest condolences and prayers.”
Actor Sanjay Dutt took a stronger stance, urging action from the Indian government. “They killed our people in cold blood. This can’t be forgiven, these terrorists need to know we are not staying quiet. We need to retaliate. I request our Prime Minister @narendramodi ji, Home Minister @AmitShah ji and Defence Minister @rajnathsingh ji to give them what they deserve,” Dutt wrote.
