In an interview with News 18 Showsha, Emraan Hashmi opened up about the ongoing discussions on social media over hypermasculinity in movies and more. He slammed wokeism during his conversation. He said, “There’s a huge uproar because a woke culture has started off through social media and generally around the world.”Hashmi went on to say, “The hypermasculine man who’s seen as toxic is what’s doing in theaters. There’s an uproar surrounding it, but that’s what people are buying tickets for. That’s predominantly how our country is.”

During the same interaction, Emraan Hashmi expressed that he totally understands why a movie like ‘Animal’, starring Ranbir Kapoor, made wonders at the box office. He said, “Why did a film like ‘Animal’ work? Yes, there was a woke brigade working against it. There was a perception to that. But there were so many men identifying with it.”
Emraan Hashmi on women-centric films and what the audience wants
He expressed further, “There’s also a space for women-centric films, though not many at this point.” Emraan added that he would like to see more movies led by females, adding, “It’s easier said than done.”He further shared that for theaters, “You need a hyper-masculine man, a villain, the tropes, the clichés. It’s very evident that it’s what the audience wants. This kind of portrayal has always worked.”He cited examples of how the hypermasculine era of Amitabh Bachchan and Vinod Khanna shaped the 70s and the 80s, giving us films like ‘Deewar’ and ‘Trishul‘ that worked.Talking about the transitional phase, “In the 90s, we switched molds and entered what can be called the soft boy era. Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, and Salman Khan came in with romantic films.”He concluded his statement, saying, “After that, there came a transition phase.
