Bollywood will happen when it has to: Sumbul

Sumbul Touqeer, who shot to fame with Imlie and later appeared on Bigg Boss 16, admits she once hoped the reality show would serve as her gateway to films. However, she also knew the journey wouldn’t be easy.“Of course, like anyone else, I hoped Bigg Boss would open doors to films. But I also knew it wouldn’t be instant or simple — nothing ever is. This industry tests your patience and persistence. For me, it was never about a quick jump; I want roles that truly matter, whether in films, TV or OTT,” she says.Currently busy with her daily soap Itti Si Khushi, Sumbul insists her long-term goals remain unchanged. “Just because I’m doing a daily soap right now doesn’t mean my hunger for films or OTT has faded. That desire is still alive, and I continue to work towards it. At the moment, television takes up most of my time and energy… Bollywood will happen when it has to.”Looking ahead, Sumbul is eager to take on roles that push her boundaries. “I’m craving something layered — something grey. A character who isn’t simply good or bad, but someone the audience doesn’t know whether to love or hate. I want to explore roles that challenge me emotionally and mentally — the kind that can shake people up and makes them think. I’ve done the safe space; now I want the unpredictable. I’d love to do a psychological thriller or a project that involves a lot of singing and dancing.”

Over time, Sumbul has also learned to handle the constant swirl of link-up rumours that come with being in the limelight. She was linked to Fahmaan Khan and more recently to Mishkat Varma. However, she says, “I’ve reached a point where it doesn’t bother me anymore. People will always talk; that’s part of being in the spotlight. If I start reacting to every rumour, I’ll lose focus. I’m very much single and focused on my work,” she clarifies.
