Being a judge on ‘American Idol’ isn’t the only responsibility singer-songwriter Carrie Underwood has. In her personal life, the 42-year-old shares two sons with husband Mike Fisher. Now, in an emotional encounter on the February 2 episode of ‘American Idol’, Carrie Underwood was left in tears when a contestant’s story made her think about her own postpartum struggles with depression.
Contestant Hannah Harper ’s song made Carrie Underwood emotional
Contestant Hannah Harper sang a song called ‘String Cheese’, which was about her personal experience with postpartum depression. Hannah shared her own experiences and struggles and said, “I was sitting on my couch wallowing,” she told judges Carrie, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie. “And you have boys, you know: Everybody wants to touch you,” she said, relating to Carrie. She went on, “And I didn’t want to be touched. I was just having a pity party, praying that the Lord would calm my spirit. And my son kept coming up to me, ‘Mom, open this. Mom, open my cheese,’” the mom of three continued through tears. “I’m like, ‘Leave me alone with the dadgum cheese.’”However, when contestant Hannah finally opened her son’s string cheese, he suddenly realized that being a mom was what she was meant to do. “When I did, I realized that God had put me in that place,” she explained, “and that where I was in my house was the biggest ministry that I could ever have.” After Hannah started performing her song, Carrie Underwood became emotional.

Hannah’s lyrics went on to explore her longing for a day when she has peace, but ultimately realizing she’d rather love her kids, even if it means “scattered toys and a baby on my hip,” an experience that Carrie clearly empathized with.When Hannah completed her performance, Carrie Underwood took a moment and wiped her tears before praising her. Underwood, the mom of sons Isaiah, 10, and Jacob, 7 said “That’s about the most relatable song I think I’ve ever heard. You might be my favorite person that’s walked through those doors.”Before contestant Hannah got her ticket to the ‘Hollywood round’ of the competition, Carrie Underwood said to her, “You’re one that I’m gonna think about when we leave here.”
