Workshop held in Pollachi for transgender people

COIMBATORE: A three-day workshop was conducted in Pollachi for transgender people on making handicrafts from coconut shells.The workshop was conducted by the National Institute of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj (NIRDPR) and the Centre on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (CIRDAP) in collaboration with the Sahodari Foundation. It was held at the Lions Club in Pollachi on July 28, 29 and 30. The participants learned how to make kitchen tools, jewellery and various artefacts using coconut shells.On the final day of the workshop, Ambika, the district social welfare officer, attended as a special guest. She appreciated the transgender trainees and their craftsmanship, assuring them of govt support for the initiative.NABARD district development manager C Thirumala Rao also took part in the event. He distributed certificates to participants.Sandhya Gopakumaran, director, training and development, NIRDPR, Hyderabad, said the workshop marked a significant step towards helping transgender people achieve economic independence through self-employment.Sahodari Foundation founder and director Kalki Subramaniam was also present.
