NEW DELHI: As Delhi is reeling under hazardous air pollution, with thick smog blanketing the city, Samajwadi Party (SP) leader RK Chaudhary made unusual remarks linking pollution to the burning of human bodies.Speaking to news agency ANI, he said, “When bodies are burnt, they release carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, and it burns oxygen in the atmosphere. Even during the lighting of fire on Holika Dahan, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide are released. Our country is not serious about air pollution. This is not about religion but the environment.”The Air Quality Index (AQI) reached “severe” levels in several parts of the capital, with readings of 442 in Ghazipur, 409 in ITO, and 447 in Palam. The city’s overall AQI stood at 330 early Friday morning, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has activated all measures under GRAP Stage-IV across Delhi-NCR to curb pollution.Flight operations at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport have also been affected, with over 150 flights cancelled and more than 200 delayed.
