‘We expect them to follow rules of human rights’: US on Bangladesh
In a fresh statement on Bangladesh, the United States on Monday asked Dhaka to “follow the rules of human rights” and be “fair” to its citizens.
“We expect every country, certainly Bangladesh and others to follow the rules of human rights and to be cognizant and fair regarding the behaviour and what their own citizens expect from their government. So I think that’s a north star for any nation,” US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said at a press briefing, according to news agency ANI.
Earlier, US Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Tulsi Gabbard’s remarks on Bangladesh had triggered a sharp response from Dhaka.
Gabbard, during her recent visit to India, criticized Bangladesh’s caretaker administration of Nobel laureate Muhammed Yunus and discussed the concept of “Islamic Caliphate” and its influence across various nations.
Bangladesh responded by calling Gabbard’s statement “misleading and damaging” to the country’s reputation and criticized America’s intelligence chief for her attempt to “paint an entire nation with a broad and unjustified brush.”
When asked about the DNI’s comments, the US State Department had emphasised the need to reduce “instances of violence against minorities” in the Asian nation.
“We condemn any instances of violence or intolerance directed toward members of minority communities in any country and have welcomed measures taken by Bangladesh’s interim government to ensure safety and security for all in Bangladesh. That’s what we’re watching. That’s what we expect. And that will be what continues,” Bruce said at the time.
Bangladesh has been under its interim government since August 2024, when the then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and came to India following months of student-led protests against her.
