Kozhikode: Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi said that the monsoon preparedness and precautionary measures implemented by Wayanad district this year after the devastating 2024 landslides could serve as a model for other states.She was speaking at the district development coordination and monitoring committee (DISHA) meeting held at the mini-conference hall of the collectorate on Monday.Pointing out that states like Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, which face similar conditions, have lessons to learn from Wayanad, Gandhi congratulated people’s representatives, district collector and officials for ensuring that not a single life was lost in the district due to monsoon-related disasters this year.

The MP directed that schemes for Scheduled Tribes be designed in alignment with their needs and way of life. “In the era of climate change, the lifestyle of tribal communities, which is in harmony with nature, is a guiding light for our future,” she said.Officials in the meeting highlighted that several projects were facing difficulties due to lack of central funding. Gandhi assured that the issue would be raised with the central govt.Gandhi said that she had discussed with Union health minister J P Nadda issues relating to Mananthavady govt medical college and health problems faced by Scheduled Tribes. She added that she had raised in the Lok Sabha the issue of loan waivers by nationalized banks for disaster-affected people.The MP appreciated Wayanad for improving its rank among the country’s aspirational districts from 112 to 10. MLAs T Siddique and I C Balakrishnan, district panchayat president Shamshad Marakkar, district collector D R Meghashree among others attended the meeting.
