Two youths, including college student, murdered in Tamil Nadu; three arrested | Trichy News

MAYILADUTHURAI: The Mayiladuthurai police have arrested three persons charged with the offence of murdering two youths including a college student on Friday night near Mayiladuthurai town.
While the kin of deceased claimed that the youths were murdered for questioning illegal liquor sales, district administration and police maintained that the double murder was a fallout of personal enmity.
Police said that a personal enmity was brewing between one M Moovendhan, 24 and his neighbour R Dinesh, 28, both residents of North street in Muttom village.
On Feb 13, when Moovendhan was standing near his house, Dinesh while passing him in a two-wheeler had reportedly booed. Subsequently, the duo assaulted each other, forcing locals to intervene and pacify them.
Police said that families of two youths shared enmity too. Meanwhile, on Friday night, at around 8.30 pm, Dinesh and his friends identified as K Harish, 25, B Sakthi, 20, and K Ajay, 19, were standing and talking on the North street in Muttom.
At that time, Moovendhan accompanied by M Thangadurai, 28, and R Rajkumar, 34, approached the spot, they were under the influence of alcohol.
The trio entered into an altercation with Dinesh and tried to assault him with knives.
Police said that Harish, Sakthi, and Ajay attempted to protect Dinesh, but the accused trio inflicted cut injuries with knives in Harish’s stomach, Sakthi in the back, and Ajay’s hands.
Though the injured youths were rushed to Mayiladuthurai govt hospital, Harish and Sakthi succumbed even before getting medical attention.
On information, Perambur police registered a case and arrested the accused Thangadurai, Rajkumar, and Moovendhan, they were remanded under judicial custody. Meanwhile, family members of the deceased duo refused to permit autopsy procedures on Saturday and demanded police to book two women whom they alleged to be behind the illegal sales of liquor in Muttom.
However, police attributed the double murder only to personal enmity, and the district administration in a press release claimed that a section of media misreported the murders as a fallout of illegal liquor sales.
Meanwhile, BJP state president K Annamalai took platform X (formerly Twitter) to condemn the double murder and criticise the state govt for failing to maintain law and order.
