Two dead, four critically injured in Loutolim shipyard explosion

Margao: A devastating blast at a shipbuilding workshop in Loutolim late on Friday evening claimed two lives and left four others critically injured. All six were labourers working on a vessel under construction at Vijay Marines shipyard at Rassaim, Loutolim.The four injured are currently undergoing treatment at Goa Medical College, Bambolim. A seventh person present at the yard sustained minor injuries and did not require hospitalisation, sources said.Antonio Moniz, the leading firefighter at Verna fire station, said: “We received a call at approximately 6.10pm informing us about a blast at Vijay Marines. Upon arrival, we found six casualties within the yard, whom we promptly transported to the hospital. Two of these later died, while the other four were admitted to the hospital for treatment.”.Preliminary findings by fire brigade officials suggest the explosion originated in an electrical panel, though the exact cause remains under investigation. A talathi who inspected the site reported detecting a strong smell and intense heat in the yard.All six casualties were identified as daily wage labourers. Personnel from the bomb disposal squad, department of factories and boilers, and Maina Curtorim police were present at the site until late night investigating the circumstances surrounding the blast.
