Panaji: State govt has identified 2 lakh square metres of Goa University land on the Taleigao plateau to construct new Goa College of Pharmacy, Goa College of Architecture, Goa College of Music, and Goa College of Art. Govt plans to spend over Rs 200 crore to build these colleges.
Goa governor and chancellor of Goa University P S Sreedharan Pillai on Thursday assured chief minister Pramod Sawant that the land will be allotted to state govt on the Goa University campus.
The governor and the CM held a meeting to resolve the deadlock over the Goa University land transfer to state govt. State-of-the-art infrastructure with a focus on the next 50 years has been envisaged by govt.
Sawant told TOI that state govt has identified the land on the campus of Goa University to construct pharmacy, architecture, music, and art colleges, and held a meeting with the governor to settle matters.
“The governor has assured us that 2 lakh square metres of Goa University land will be transferred to state govt to construct the four colleges,” Sawant said. He added that the designs for the buildings of most colleges have been finalised, and in some cases, tenders would be floated soon to appoint the contractors.
Sawant said that all four colleges will have common facilities such as a ground, a convention centre, and a hostel. He said that Goa College of Architecture is functioning from rental premises and Goa College of Pharmacy is located on congested premises with its hostel at Altinho.
“Once all four colleges are shifted from Panaji, it would help to decongest the capital city,” Sawant said.
He said that the construction of the colleges will begin in one and a half months.
An outlay of Rs 74.2 crore for the directorate of education to develop basic facilities in schools across Goa, a scheme to replace the aging Balrath buses, and compulsory internships to acquire graduate degrees from Goa colleges were announced by the CM in his budget last month.
Sawant said that a mega complex will be constructed in and around Panaji with new buildings for Goa College of Pharmacy, Goa College of Architecture, Goa College of Music, and Goa College of Art.
